just been out and done my niught time skip out and it is now -7 and all the automatic water drinkers have frozen in the stables. I have had to carry about 30 gallons of water from the kitchen to the stables so that the horses can have something to drink. Luckily my OH always comes out to help with the night time skip out - oh and my lurchers and cat join in to rat so he was able to carry as well. it took me 4 hours to thaw all the taps out this morning - but guess what i will have to do again tomorrow. And they are all wrapped up and insulated as are all the pipes - just doesn;t seem to work in these temperatures.

I have had to give up trying to break the ice in the field troughs as it is now just ice and no water so i think horses will have to be out for less during the day or just do without water in the field for a few hours.

I feel for both of you, quite bloody cold enough here and wouldn't want it any colder! Defrosting taps and lugging water about is getting booooooooring!

Yep I'm Scotland too - -12 here tonight brrr!! All the water supplies in the fields are frozen and all the horses have had to be moved so they have access to running water. Water pipes are having to be blow torched to free them up and even the indoor school is starting to freeze

i have to say if scotlands supposed to get colder poor taz is going to have to go up an extra rug weight he's only in a medium weight during the day and has a heavey weight on inthe stable lol. im fine for water as he gets buckets in his stable he wont drink out of water drinkers and he gets buckets in the paddock so i know how much he drinks but this weather is getting ridiculous

i just want to ride lol

Are your buckets not freezing solid? All the stabled horses are having to have their water buckets fully insulated with loads of bedding and haylage and they are still getting a bit icy
