7 deadly sins

No one wears a hat in western riding? Don't see why not however.

Mine suppose are:
1) Knowing it all
2) Not wearing a hat
3) Unnecessary tack
4) Being heavy handed
5) Over priced horses and horse stuff
6) Not wanting to improve
7) Being bitter about others

p.s I love a bit of bling! :)

No one wears a hat in western riding? Plenty of people do. Like everything else it is a personal choice. Under 16 (I think that is the age) have to in competition.

Mine:

1. Less is more. No nosebands, no throat lashes, no browbands.
2. My horses share tack:eek:
3. I open the gate for them to run into the barn.
4. I really don't give a Tinker's Cuss about what people think of what I do, how I do it or when I do it (I have reached that happy age :))
5. I ride in jeans and trainers
6. I will pts horses that have to have medication forever to keep them going.
7. Can't think of another one right now

1. I ride in weeklies in the winter
2. I feed extra hay on a fri night so I can sleep in
3. I don't always groom before I ride
4. I go through phases when I never clean my tack
5. My new iw trailer is always filthy
6. My car boot hasn't ever been hoovered out
7. I spend more time with my horses than any human being!!

1. I abuse my geldings my dressing them in bling and pink.
2. I catch one of them by grabbing skin/mane/tail/rug before he f@?!/ off across fields
3. Sometimes I'm to lazy and make my mum do them for me
4. I lead them with ropes round their necks
5. I over rug
6. I feed them polos etc ALL the time
7. I brought 5 point breastplates as they looked cool when incould of just kept there elastic ones!

Not in any particular order.

1. Horses kept on their own, without another horse in sight.
2. No turn out at all (not even an all weather turnout pen) for several months of the year.
3. When an obviously frightened horse is beaten to make it go past something.
4. Heavy handed riders.
5. Untreated wounds/illness etc...
6. Horse left in stable or not checked for weeks because the owner can't be arsed to go up and it's on DIY livery.
7. Treating the animal like a machine with no empathy for it at all.

My sins (things that people have commented on).

1. I don't groom all the mud off before I ride - just the mud from where the tack goes.
2. My electric fences are often wonky and have a kink in them.
3. I don't stable my horses unless it's medically needed and there is no other option.
4. I'm too soft.
5. I dismount and lead my mare past things when out hacking.
6. I let her stop to poo.
7. I turn my horses out on a hillside, together (should be on flat land in individual paddocks).

1. Riders who saw at the horses mouth
2. Over use of whip
3. Over use of spurs
4. People who wind their horse up intentionally because they think it's cool riding a quirky horse
5. Over rugging
6. People who don't show regularly
7. People who never ride then when they do complain about how hyper their horse is

Mine probably are:
1. When Andy gets too joggy I just let him canter because after 2 years of trying to stop him I can no longer be bothered
2. I like to teach tricks (spanish walk)
3. I ride too short
4. I don;t do enough hill work
5. I buy all the cheap horse feed/ bedding
6. I never put stable rugs on, stay in turnout rugs
7. When in a hurry in the morning I don't put much chaff in Andy's feed so he eats faster

4. Blaming your horse.... yes look in the mirror for the person to blame

Oh, I agree you should wear a hard hat, but I have never seen someone riding western in a hard hat. :o
I have seen people getting on horses which are too sharp/naughty for english riding without a hat. As I see it you still have the same distance to fall no matter what saddle you are using!

Depriving company
Depriving water
Depriving food
Depriving turnout
Working lame/wrong horses
Hurting horses
Selling/giving away wrong/problem horses

ETA I've got pretty basic standards, I guess.

Mine;
1) letting my oldie do as she pleases, pretty much all the time.
2) when no kids about riding same oldie back from the field with no hat.
3) rarely tie horses up, & when I do its usually very loose or ground tied. And leaving stable doors open.
4) riding without correct gear. Eg shorts & bikini top, leggings & vest tops, jeans, hiking boots etc.
5) until last season did lr at local shows with daughter in similar clothes to above, occasionally jods & gilet but never correct attire.
6) always pick out all feet from one side, plus stuff like putting saddles & rugs on from the offside to save time, general lack of 'correctness'
7) don't follow what most people would consider 'safety' guidelines, but imo not a sin, I have my own methods.
In general;
1) horses fully stabled for weeks unless medical need.
2) individual turnout, again unless for horses welfare & even then should be able to see others & interact over fence etc. Also includes horses kept stabled alone.
3) people who try to solve symptoms without looking at the cause.
4) blaming the horse without first looking to yourself.
5) heavy hands, unsympathetic riders, lack of empathy for animals in general.
6) using gadgets when you don't know why or how.
7) idiots in general. This includes pushy mums, up themselves adults, & the guy on the grey on big bens thread.

I think if youre hacking out , schooling or leading a youngster then a hard hat is a good idea, but for showing Im not wearing something that looks like a hollowed out turtle on my head :D

My top 7 actually 8 in no particular order would be

Overuse of spurs
Sawing on horses mouth
Using Rolkour technique thinking horse is working in a lovely outline
Not giving horse adequate turnout
People who are obviously too heavy for their horses & don't give a damn
Nasty pony club moms
Livery owners who arrive up & have had their horse tacked up for them & when done riding pass horse fully tacked back to yard helpers!
People that blame the horse on issues whereas its their crap riding!

Mine
Being too soft with my Mare
Telling my OH I am heading out for a meeting where as go up to spend some extra time at the yard!
Being too tough on myself all of the time
Not being too honest when asked for opinions on someones riding if I don't know them well
Giving treats to my Mare when out hacking!
Don't always do a full groom before riding
I am starting to bulk my Mares feed out with carrots & turnip so she thinks she is getting the same amount of feed as the other liverys!

Mine probably are...

1. I give Sandy a huge morning net so that I can get up later.
2. I rarely groom, having a perlino pony does that to you. It's all futile.
3. I laugh at how fat his head is, and make fun of him for being short.
4. I barely ever clean my tack.
5. I love bling, and ride in a dimante KP Equestrian bridle... on a gelding.
6. Sandy has individual turnout with no company :eek:
7. I ride in wellies. ALL the time.

Not here you won't ;) ... unless you are riding in English Pleasure classes and the dress code requires a helmet.
Are you sure ??I thought
you had to have a hat on your head at the start of your class Ive never seen anyone over here or in any AQHA class english or western without one ?????

Sins i hate:
1) over bitting a horse
2) people who blame their horse for their crap riding
3) under/over rugging
4) People who smoke on their horse
5) over use of spurs/whips
6) children wearing spurs
7) people who ignore lameness or ill-fitting tack etc...

My sins:
1)horse wears an outdoor at night to make turning out easier
2) hacked pony up to field in headcollar (wore my hat though!)
3) don't groom every day
4) feed varies everyday
5) i give my horse hay when tied up
6) i give my horse a crack if he naps or spooks like an idiot
7) i don't always boot up horse when hacking/schooling

should have added over bitting a horse to mine. NOTHING worse than seeing a horse in a harsh bit when not needed especially a young horse.

Guess mine would be:
1. An addiction to pony polishing - my horses are not allowed tangled manes or tails. Ever.
2. A tendency to wear jangly spurs. Quite often rather sharp and possibly not ideal if you want to squat down rapidly.
3. Inability to leave horses for the night with droppings in their stable.
4. Not turning a horse out every day. Or sometimes, any day.
5. No patience for people who don't read their rule or pattern books.
6. Hacking around the farm with no bridle. This can worry people.
7. Finding it very difficult to take an interest in someone's horse if it is not orange.
