The injusticeof the David Stewart case is staggering
In all 7fjord horses died, 3 starved to death in the fields at cranloch (fields and barns near fyvie)
the other 9 horses in the fields were also starving
with condition scores of 0,0.5 and 1 some the vets said within days of death
some had warn their teeth dowm scaping the ground in seach for food and water
The steading barn was full of hay , it was locked
since rescue sadly 3 horses from cranloch have died of acute ragwort poisoning
with nothing else to eat the ponies ate this terrible weed
another fjord from his home at south denhill also died of ragwort poisoning , he was just 2yrs old
none of the charges relating to ragwort poisoing were heard in court
the courts failure to charge him on this is a great injustice
to all the horses and all the welfare organizations who campaign tielessly for the control of this dangerous weed
it undermines all this excellent work and makes these sad deaths and the terrible suffering enjoured by all his animals

I live pretty near there as well, sickening to think someone like him could cause this. IMO theres something mentally wrong with people who cause suffering to animals.

That person needs ot banned from keeping animals of any sort, a 750 fine, is that it!?! makes your blood boil, poor innocent horses

Yes it is horrific, they had nothing else to eat except ragwort. Unfortunately he pleaded guilty at the last minute & the procurator fiscal (scottish magistrate) who was dealing with it could not attend so a replacement was brought in who knew nothing of the case. He failed to read all the charges. It's a digrace. The 7 horses are just the tip of the iceberg. There has been concern from day 1 of him owning fjords. They are a very hardy breed & live on very little which makes this case even worse. The case was reported to sspca 21 Dec 06 but the horses were not removed until late Jan 07. Had the ILPH been involved they would have acted straight away. The sad thin is he has 12 horses at his house & another 9 to be returned shortly. He put them with a lady who has diligently cared & nursed them, she has paid all the bills for the last 14 months & has nothing at the end of it. This man should be banned for life. I for one will no longer shop at Morrisons in Inverurie (his work as manager of the Butchery Dept). I hope the sspca will appeal but I can't see it happening. The horses he has at South Denhill, St, Katherines have had a hard winter & there is no evidence of feed hay being put out. It's a disgrace & the law is ridiculous. because the 3 horses died & are no longer in his possesion the Sherriff could not slap a deprivation order on him. Should be some more in H & H over next couple of weeks.

When I lived in Scotland, I took an equestrian petition to the Scottish Parliament. I had a lot of support from MSP Sylvia Jackson, who has now lost her seat, but took a great interest in Animal Welfare issues.

Have those of you in Scotland considered organising a petition to deal with the issues you have raised on this forum?

NAMELY Incompetence of PF in this case.

TIME it took to deal with the welfare issues, possibly why SSPCA finds it lacks support (I gave up on them by the way, they NEVER responded to any of my calls not all horses).

INADEQUACY OF SENTENCE

I agree it is totally shocking. Not the only case recently of people who have responsibility within a certain breed society to be convicted of cruelty.
