We went over to West Wilts today for the 90. I wasn't feeling too terrified as we had done the Blenheim eventer challenge the week before and he was super, bar one run out in the XC which was my mistake.

That not too terrified feeling quickly went away when I walked the XC. It was a totally different ball game to Aston 90. A beautiful course but everything was max height and even worse max width. A hanging long with a seriously nasty steep bank on landing made me feel pretty ill (especially as I had a fall XC schooling off something similar but half the size) and there were some combos which were a huge amount more difficult than Aston.

Dressage first, he warmed up feeling absolutely super. The minute we went to do our test it fell apart a bit and he was pretty fiery. The judge said to us afterwards that he looked "a bit tricky". He did execute the most perfect turn on the forehand. Shame it was meant to be a square halt. We did get a 35.5 though which was about mid range for our section which I was really delighted with as our dressage has been slowly getting worse but this was our best yet.

SJ I was so so pleased with, although we had two down (one down at Aston) I thought he felt the best he ever has and for our third time SJing at this height I was delighted. And he certainly saved me at the last! Any comments/criticisms are more than welcome, I'm still new to this so anything is helpful and I won't take offence :) I know my lines are still rubbish, especially into 1 where I couldn't work out which side of the timer to be on... Very dumb moment! lower leg is a working progress lol!

And the XC... My previous crippling nerves were back in full swing and I thought of various excuses to not go. A couple of cans of pimms mixers (really is the only way I can get myself out of the start box when I feel like this) and off we went. He was a bit backwards to the first which was turning away from the lorry park but after that he absolutely nailed it. I've really struggled getting him focused and not looking everywhere bar the jump in the 3 80's and one 90's he/we've done and although he's only ever had one XC Penalty it's always felt a bit messy. But he was totally different today. He answered question after question with no hesitation and jumped the combos absolutely wonderfully. I really couldn't have asked for a better round- he just flew. I think as well because I was so scared and so worried, I rode a huge amount more positively and he responded. I had to choke back a bit of a tear at the end! Have a good laugh at my absolutely horrific face in one of these .. Oh to be one of those poised graceful riders!

We have come a long way from scraping over cross poles and 70's in February and it's a credit to him that he's done so well with a rider who frankly doesn't have a clue what she's doing or where she's going most of the time! Here was our very first competition, his first ever proper SJ comp and the second I had done in over 15 years :)

Next up is Calmsden if we don't get balloted and then Tweseldown if the ground stays ok, he doesn't like deep going and no point scaring ourselves if it's not good.

And a fun pic from hound exercise the other week... Cheeky boy!

Pep talk

That's absolutely brilliant Michen, well done both of you, what a fabulous report. You look poised and graceful, and more importantly happy, in all of those pictures.

Well done, he's very handsome and you look very happy in the xc photos! I will have to take a leaf out of your book and try the Pimms trick to calm my nerves (before the sj in my case).

Thank you! Never would I have dreamt of doing a 90. Never even really intended to regularly event!

Wow fantastic report, I would be over the moon to have achieved half of what you have. Both look great together!

Thanks Jennbags, the facial expression is a bit wacky haha! I was very happy and cheering him the whole way. Hope your boy is good X

Haha happy indeed- slightly demented but happy! It really does help, or you could go for the ready mixed gin cans if you need a bit more oomph...

I'd never have guessed that pimms mixers are the answer to comp nerves! You both look great in those pics and it does look a meaty course. You've even got a nice smiley one, so who says you aren't a poised rider?! Sounds like he's really coming along well, and gaining confidence, well done.

Haha, i think it was a cross between a big smile and a swear word!

Really enjoyed that. I love that your crippling nerves face looks completely like you are a model on a magazine cover grinning away!

Thank you xx

What lovely pics, and well done!

Yes! They really are. Frankly if I wasn't driving I would skip the mixers and go straight for the hard stuff ;) He really is and looking like quite the little event pony at the moment.

Fab fab pictures. You look so happy and so does he. Well done!

I have a lot of sympathy for you on the nerves front, they can make it so difficult to do anything. Maybe you should carry a hipflask ;)

well done, what a great day for you both, looks like you are on the right track and have come a long way this year. we have also just entered for Tweseldown in October.... EEEK..... might have to try your Pimms trick before XC :-)

That's a great idea, I could swig from it during the XC as well!!!!! Hehe

You both look brilliant - its been great following your progress this year, i know you've had your wobbles but you really have picked yourself up each time, and really gone from strength to strength and thats what its all about!

We are going to T'down too, im going to fence judge the day i'm, not riding so do come and say hi if you spot us!

Well done! Love ur trick for calming the nerves! I take propananol when nervous but might try the mixer ;-)
Ur video was lovely to watch, lovely quiet riding. I'm too under qualified to give any cc!

Ah thank you, I always feel like I'm bouncing around like a lemon or frozen rigid with fear. Need a happy medium. Might try the propananol... ;)

Well done you and B, when I think back to the doom and gloom earlier this year when he was off with laminitis I remember saying you would be doing 90's before the end of the season, you were far less positive, it is so nice it has all come together, now you need to stop putting yourself down and gain some confidence in your ability, B is obviously confident in you so now you need to believe in yourself.

I know- that was a horrible time! And I certainly remember thinking the idea of doing a 90 was completely out of the question. He has given so much :) xx

Thank you, never know whether to post these things as it seems a bit self centred somehow but I like reading other people's so why not!

What a lovely report. I'm so pleased to read it after all your trials with the mare. He looks like super, genuine fun horse.
Please keep posting, I'm horseless so have to get my competition thrills from all of you lot!

Am I right in thinking he was the one you had no brakes on out hunting? If so, how does the pelham with 2 reins feel? I'm trying the same on mine but put roundings on. Thinking double reins prob. best!!

Absolutely he is. Pelham is useless but it was fine for this as it was just walk and trot hound exercise. No good for anything faster! I wouldn't use roundings personally but that's just because I prefer to ride off the "snaffle" rein and give him a reminder with the curb when I need it.

Thank you!! Sorry you are horseless. Any plans for another?
