My 7 year old nephew is learning to ride. He comes up in a rash and is bunged up for a few hours after riding. We don't want this to hold him back. Any suggestions re an antidote please??

Many thanks
Paul

More exposure! My youngest is allergic to ponies, he has to be really bad to get to antihistamines. He's grown out of it a bit but the dust in the coats and hay will set him off.

It seems to be the skin flakes and dander that sets people off. When I rode Police Horses I was often told by people that they are usually allergic to horses, but not to mine, and demanded to know what product I had coated the horse in. It was not a product, it was that the horses were washed and groomed to within an inch of their lives before going out in public! They were clipped in winter and we even had one that grew a long coat that was clipped year round. This washing/grooming was not a one off thing, it was pretty much daily.

Of course, this is only possible if the horse is stabled and rugged, but a squeaky clean horse, with clean and supple skin, does not seem to provoke such a reaction in people. If it is a riding school horse there may not be anything you can do about that. I would still use a dust mask if he is grooming at all, and wear waterproof gloves for grooming that are then removed so he does not transfer dead skin and danger from fingers to eyes.

Maybe they could groom really well first?

Piriton or other antihistamines for kids? Ask in the pharmacy. The reaction should get less as he becomes more exposed to the allergens, so might not need to take it every time.
