Has anyone else heard any details on the accident that happened over the weekend in Wadsworth IL? I know that out of 59 horses, 9 horses either had died do to the accident, or were put down right away. Also I heard that they were headed to or from auction, but i didnt not get conformation if the were headed for slaughter. I am very courious about this b/c i would like to help if at all possible. If anyone knows or hears of any way to help i'd really like to lend a hand. Thanks

God I feel ill reading it - Can't believe this sort of thing is still allowed to carry on - I hope they are all rescued and rehomed to a better life.

if the animal rights/do-gooders hadnt been alowed, through their propaganda crap, to shut down the US abattoirs then the poor buggers wouldnt have so far to travel before being dispatched....

same [****]....different day

Yes, for those of you who want the American response and to see what Americans feel about the shutting of the slaughter plants there, go to http://forums.delphiforums.co/forthehorses
You'll see more info on the accident, plus be able to see how much people want to help with the surpluss horses left in the US with the slaugher ban. With a national herd numbering 9 MILLION you can see the horse industry is in for a mighty fall, and fast. Join us over there is you have anything to add, be you for or against slaughter. EVERYONE is allowed to voice their opinions and we are learning from each other. We'll all come back here to H&H but we need help deciding how to educate people, what to do about the Mexican slaughter plants etc. These long yearlings were being traveled double decker, which is why this one accident ended up being so devastating.
Come on fellow Brits (well, I want to BE British even if my accent is funny so forgive me) give us a hand. By the way the horses in question were draft babies from a PMU plant, and those who have survived are to be picked up and taken the rest of the way to Canada to survive. Talk about adding insult to injury.
There's also a great thread/article about how the responders had been trained, how the police had vets on speed dial, things we should consider over here on this green and pleasant land.

No, I agree it was the drivers fault, but with 100s of 1000s of horses being shipped to horrible deaths in Mexico and much kinder ones in Canada, but mostly to Mexico where they are stabbed repeatedly in the back, paralysed and then hung up to have their throats cut, I think we can lay at least part of the blame on the slaughter ban.

Opps, sorry girls,
BUT I feel sooo sorry for those who risked their lives to pull living horses out from under dead ones, the vets who responded, the SPCA guys that came, all the volunteers. Those are the ones that are going to be physically and emotionally scarred from this incident as all the surviving horses are going to be picked up and go to slaughter anyway in Canada.
One thing if you are not involved, another for those who were there, don't you agree?
And traveling horses in a double decker should not be allowed, the horses can not lift their heads and necks while stuck in them and they are of nature top-heavy. Cattle trucks were not built to carry horses with their relatively high center of gravity and their long legs.

Im sorry buit i think this has nothing to do with the slaughter ban.
Its simply negligence and irresponsibilty and bloody stupidity that horses are allowed to be transported this way!
It may be down to the law or it may be down to the transport company and greed but either way its no doubt that there will be more than one person with the blood of these horses on their hands.
lets hope something is now done about the transporting of these horses and some good can come out of something terrible.
I watched this vid this morning, someone may have posted so if so i am sorry. It is graphic and upsetting so choose your descretion to watch.

those poor animals, that is so sad, i hope those who lost their lives did not suffer too long, i cant help but think they probably did
IMO animals who are going to be ultimately slaughtered/eaten should be done so and then transported, it is disgusting that animals are transported on long harrowing journeys, and that guy who ran the red light well, i hope he is riddled with guilt, though i imagine he doesn't give much of a damn to have been involved in the first place
poor poor horses

I'm sorry Blueberry, but I fail to understand how you think this has nothing to do with the slaughter?!! If it didn't have anything to do with it, then there would not have been more than 15 horses nicely partitioned in a lorry. The only reason there was 60-odd was because they were going to slaughter in a cattle lorry !! Unbelievable! It is sheer greed that got so many horses in this unsuitable vehicle. Yes the guy was an ass for running a red light, but had the horses been transported correctly, there would not have been such carnage. That is why a horse lorry is designed in they way they are with partitions etc.

From another horse forum - the death toll from this crash is now *18* but the 41 survivors are apparently 'recovering well'

the reason for the journey was apparently that laws have been passed forcing the closure of horse slaughter abattoirs in the USA (meat for human consumption) - so all horses for slaughter for meat now have to travel to canada or mexico

the driver is being investigated by both state and national police as the journey was interstate. He apparently hit another vehicle and has been charged with failing to obey a traffic signal and not slowing down to avoid an accident.

further charges may be lodged in regard to the transport conditions of the horses but nothing on that till next week.

Simply this, to me this issue is of HOW the horses are transported and allowed to be transported.
If correct and appropriate transporting procedures were in place the horses would :
not be travelled in a way that so many are cramped and falling over each other
would not travel in a double decker truck
be secured within partitions

It all comes down to money and greed, to put appropriate good practice in place costs money.....better trucks, drivers trained in transporting live animals etc

if someone is knocked down crossing a road on his way to a supermarket because his corner shop has closed down. Is it the shops fault for closing ??
I dont know why my viewpoint is so difficult to grasp? it isnt technical.

Perhaps they ought to change the system so that the horses are slaughtered straight after the auction. Have the slaughter house next the auction ring, because it would appear that a high percentage of these poor creatures are just going for slaughter anyway. I don’t understand the mentality of people to say we don’t eat horse meat therefore we don’t need to slaughter them here, when that is exactly what is happening to them anyway, except they have to endure an horrendous journey & then be despatched in an inhumane manner. The powers that be obvously did not think the whole thing through, now why does that not surprise me.

I agree, they dont think about it enough.
Look at France as an example, they have a policy that says they will not slaughter in-foal mares. You may think thats good until you realise that instead they export them to Italy on a 3/5 day horrific journey to be slaughtered! Many die on the way through exaustion and inhumane conditions.

Hence the government petition to ban live export.

Anyone, if you haven't already signed then please do

If live export is banned, then eu countries will have to slaughter horses in their own country and this cruel needless practise will stop.

Signed, this cruelty has to stop,my ponys dont know how lucky they are,I wish i could win the lottery so i could help horses and ponys, donkeys and mules in need,i was reading about a local to me abbatoir, who slaughters 2000 to 3.000 Thorougbreds a year, thats with out all the other ponys and horses, that is just one,i cant sleep at night for worrying about are equines, cant we all do something to HELP,PLEASE

It is terrible isnt it, hopefully things will start to change when the government realises that in general we will not tolerate cruelty and needless deaths.

i haven't signed this particular petition, although i have signed the ILPH one.

i'm not against slaugther of horses, ...i actually take equines to my local abattoir on a regular basis,...i'm very much against the way they are transported on te continent....

Its great you have signed a government petition.

I dont have a great issue with horse slaughter at all-if it is carried out humanely and considerately although i would not choose to take one of my horses.
Everyone, im sure, has their own need/reason to use slaughterhouses.
