9 year old shihtzu fitting - now at vets - so so worried

as above really - my dog started having fits about a year ago and has been on medication for epilepsy since, tablets given and taken religiously.
But tonight he had a huge fit - i really thought he was goign to die - its horrible to watch, he goes so so stiff, froths at the mouth and is obviously very very distressed.
He is now at the vets, being kept in overnight - they mentioned a brain tumour and im home now worrying to death - he is 9 and ive had him since he was 6 weeks old.
They have stabilised him and are doing more tests tomorrow.
Does anyone have any experience of this?
 
thank you murphys that does mean so so much - i wont get any sleep tonight, how can i when he is not at my feet like he normally is - ty xxxx x
 
A friend's BC has this issue and is increasing in amount. Is yours stable re amount and frequency if episodes? If so, hopefully the meds are keeping him stable. Hope he's back with you soon. :)
 
Hugs for you ((((hugs))))) and your poor little dog, not only distressing for your dog, but you also, I do have experiance of this, the vets mentioned possible brain tumour, but my boxer didn't do so well on the meds, but as you say your dog has been stable for 12mnts, so may be just a case of uping the meds, fingers crossed for you.

ty so much - i never thought upping the meds would be possible, i just thought scan tomorrow so worst news - noone mentioned upping meds - ty so so much, i dont think i will get much sleep tonight - he is part of the family and the house is just dead now x
 
hi quickfire.
Well he was stable overnight and we saw a different vet in the morning who said he doubts very much it is a tumour as he has no fits since being on his medication for a year until now - if it was a tumour he woudl have fitted before this.

The new vet thinks his body has become accustomed to the old dose so he has increased it, my poor lad is very very sleepy but again this is normal as his body adjusts to the new dose. At least he is home and very comfy in his bed snoring away. To have a brain scan he would have to go a bigger vets a long way from home and this would upset him even more.The vet reckons it will take 7 days for his body to adjust to new meds but if no better (ie more awake) by next appt next week they will readjust his dose.

Phewwww I have been thinking about you and your little dog, am so happy for you both that he is on the mend, I did think the extra meds would do the trick!
 
My dog is epileptic. He started fitting occasionally at about 18months old (he's now 4yrs old) and then had one episode during the night so bad he went blind and couldn't walk. I never thought that he would recover, but he went to Cambridge University Vet College. They kept him there until they got his tablets right but he was still strange for a long time when he came home. They also said just because he's on medication don't expect that he'll never have fits. He does keep getting used to the tablets and then his dose is increased. It can take months for them to adjust to the new dose properly. He has seven tablets twice a day of two different drugs! It's awful to see them fitting. I know just how you feel. One thing I've learned is, never give up on them, no matter how bad it looks.

ty quickfire for your kind words and thoughts and templewood i am so so sorry - is your dog still blind or did he get his sight back? Luckily gucci wasnt so young when he had his first fit - he was 8 although apart from this problem he is the happiest little dog ever and still acts like a puppy when well!
The biggest problem we have now is he can never be left alone just in case but luckily grandma lives close and adores him so is happy to have him when we do have to leave him x
 
He got his sight back, thankfully. He's a bit clumsy and is always banging into things, but I think that's the drugs. They also make him drink a lot, so he's always going out for a pee!
He's a happy dog though and loves everyone.
