9 years loyal service and no reference... guess the company

A friend of ours worked as a lawyer for a very well know building company based in the South East, he had worked in the Legal Department for 10 years and when he was made redundant his boss refused to give him a reference stating "personal liability" as the reason. It made our friend feel as though he could not be trusted and might run off with the Client Account.

The thing was the boss of the Legal Department was a lazy sod and dumped all his work on our friend and so when this happened it was the final insult. What have you got to lose in telling the truth if some one was a good worker.

I don't get it, I am applying for jobs and ALL ask for a reference, how do you even get past the application stage if your last employer won't give any reference?

It makes my blood boil.

Ps I am guessing at DH

Haha not DH, the company's refusal of reference meant it took nearly 3 months before I could start my new job. Shame they couldn't burn down... oh wait a minute (!?) lol

I guessed Robinsons last night, but as you are so busy slagging them off and promoting your article in Horsescene you might not have noticed. FWIW very few companies approach your current employers for a reference, they usually take the one before that.
And as a little aside it is very unprofessional to behave in such a way (on your part and theirs) life is too short and business is too precious to burn bridges.
Maybe they haven't provided a reference because they didn't think you deserved it?

Hi Baggybreeches I'm sorry I didn't see your other post, I apologise for any promotion it wasn't intentional and I'm not getting any reward for it anyway or payment. I'm just excited to have something in print but I didn't mean to cause offence. These aren't my current employers either, they are the one previous hence it being such a big deal. And yes, I agree maybe my work was awful and didn't deserve a reference, I dually apologise for thinking I could do my job and deserving any credit for it.
