9yo girl dies after opening fizzy drink on horse!

Really sad - but why was a 9 year old child allowed to open a can of drink while riding anyway? Bit like when you see children taking their jackets off while riding along, which is fine unless it spooks the pony and they have a nasty fall. In this case, surely it is the adults' responsibility to educate them that horses can be unpredicable (and are not like bicycles!), and to be treated with respect. If you want to drink, ask to stop and get off, or wait until someone can hold you pony while you do it. Such a tragedy that it takes this sort of accident to make people think about these things.

Well I guess her father won't make that mistake again! I do think people are being a tad judgemental. The very act of riding a horse is dangerous; yes, we can take precautions, but this was a freak accident. Anything can set a horse off, and there is a possibility she had been opening cans of drink while riding for ever without a problem. Maybe when her horse bolted her father rode after her, causing the horse to carry on. It would be a natural reaction. Who knows? The upshot is a happy ride has turned into the worst wort of tragedy, and everyone involved is paying the ultimate price.

such a tragic accident, many riders do silly things on horse back but are lucky enough to get away with it, this poor little girl didnt, my thoughts are with her family especially her father who will probably blame his self.

. Ive said it before and Ill say it again-when I was a child I/we fell off, got up and got on again-none of our parents would have dreamed of making a fuss. We rode on the what do call em over the top of tractor wheels and most of us are here to rejoice in the memory. We used to have our own rodeos riding the bullocks in the shippen yards-we got covered in [****] and bruises but bloody hell-it was fun!We swam the length of the dam and sat down to a 'chitter and bite' made lovingly by our relative mums. We went out on our ponies at dawn and returned at dusk-all happy, filthy and nackered (ponies included). We hacked to the 'Pony Club/shows etc'. and hacked back home without adult intervention. We were allowed to live and make our own mistakes without being molly coddled although we were controlled from a distance. Accidents happen, have always happened and will always happen no matter how much we fuss and worry. I feel so suffocated reading about how 'it' could have been 'avoided if only...' Lets get real, life begins and life ends-we all have to die of something and when our time is up, at 9 years old or 90 years old our time is up

. I believe that its already written on our souls and...!
Lets stop blaming and saying 'if only the parents or whoever had done or hadnt done things would have been different'. Its so easy to spout this crap when its not us who are involved..arent we all PERFECT and INFALLABLE? Its about time we stop pointing the finger and thinking the worst about others.
This little girl died due to a series of events and not because...blah blah.
God Bless You and Your Parents. Mairi.

I think the phrase we are looking for is 'let him who is without sin cast the first stone'-NO I am not a religious nut, its the only quote I remember!
Hands up who can honestly say they have never done anything other than by the book around their horse!
My hand is firmly clamped to my side.

Well said Mairi. There is such a dearth of finger pointing from people on this forum, in other threads too, who probably don't know the facts but feel qualified to spout there judgemental gibberish. We ALL do things without thinking sometimes, yes, even you 'perfect people' Most of the time we get away with it but sometimes.............

It is a terrible tragedy.

My sympathies go out to all involved.

Hindsight is .................

Round of applause Mairi, I agree totally.

Ok so we would never do it now & I would go ape if my daughter got on a horse without a hat. But as kids we would jump on our ponies & ride back to the yard, no hat & just a head colar with the leadrope attached either side. We would slide off their backs down their rumps, climb in & out their legs. As children you dont think, & why would a 9yo think twice about opening a drink. This is a very sad story & if we all had hindsite, there would be no such thing as an accident.

So sad to hear that a girl is allowed to open up a fizzy drink with her experienced father next to her,he should have told her to wait until she got off the horse, the guilt will be with the father for the rest of his life and a lesson has been learnt for everyone else,it might sound harsh, but my condolences goes out to the family.

Glad someone has some common sense here! Although wearing a hat is better than not, I highly doubt it would have saved this little girl if she had been wearing one.

As for someone saying that oversized western stirrups would make it easier to be dragged....no way! I would think they would be far easier to get a foot out of than most English stirrups I have seen. If I were on a bolting horse I would way rather be in a Western saddle as all around it would be easier to stay on and get your feet out.

This was a sad freak accident and I feel so sick at all the finger pointing going on in here about a young girl who died in such a tragic way.
