A 5yr old as a first horse?

As said by others, it depends on the horse.

In fairness if the horse is calm and quiet and all she wants to do is a bit of plodding around then it will probably be fine.

I've have various aged horses the easiest is my 3 year old Clydesdale x cob that is a dope on a rope and does everything possible to sleep or eat!!! I have a rising 2 year old shire x TB and at the moment is a dream boat and hasn't put a foot wrong. I also have a 12 year old cob x something and can't keep all four feet on the ground at once!! I have a 14 year old TB who is very calm but doesn't like drains!!!!

Age doesn't make a horse well behaved and i agree that a 5 year old is still learning but sometimes it's better to get a youngster so you know it's true history, you can learn together and you can make it in to a horse you want rather than buying someone else's mistakes.

Go and see the horse and take it from there, you don't know until you try.

Good luck and i hope all goes well.
