My horse has a very strong personality, I've had him 14 months and over come many problems. His one plus is he's a bold and careful jumper, x country and show jumping but he's started going backwards fast, stamping and doing small rears if I dare to tell him what to do or ask him to slow down, I don't like jumping 1mtr or x country at 100mph..as I kick him forwards he's kicking out with his hind legs and pawing the ground, reversing and generally having a paddy, won't turn or listen.. My trainer says he needs to be punished as he's wasting my time and energy but is there any other way its getting that its every time we go training and he is wasting my time and it is no fun reversing into fencing and ditches:( Does it sound like bad behaviour to every one else.

it sounds like he is trying to tell you something - like he`s maybe in pain but other than that i`d get rid of your trainer if you`re getting advice like that.

Teeth sorted and the vet has had his hands over him and could find no sore patches..& had the saddle checked & restuffed recently. (it was an expensive March) once he's over the first fence he's good as gold..and at x country events he's good its rally's with the stopping and starting that the behaviour begins.

Not sure but I would 2nd the change instructor advice. Does sound like he is trying to tell you something. Maybe have back checked by physio...not all vets at good at finding back pain (trust me on that! a whole respected surgery of them!!)

thanks folks, it goes against the grain to hit him..sorted everything else with patience and reassurance, will ask around for another another trainer by recommendation!
