A bad idea?

What awful pics

Part of me would be suspicious, if there are no problems with him surely after a couple of weeks of even gentle work he would be far more saleable? why not just put that little bit of effort in? I can understand situations where there is no jockey or whatever but that doesnt seem the case here

This is my thoughts- surely if he's not been ridden since August, why not advertise him then, unless it's been a pregnancy or something, but then why not say? And if he's been ok, like you say a few weeks and he'd be fine...hmmm....there's something I like about him, but the pics don't help

There are a couple of well known lines in his pedigree

Try looking on Allbreed for more information on the offspring of the parents and have a Google to see if there are any on line pics which will give you a rough idea of quality. He isnt listed on there but his sire is, if you find the sire's pedigree then click on Reports and Progeny it will give you a list. This one isnt listed as he isnt on allbreed (not uncommon)

Also try the WPCS site to see if that gleans anything

What a great name for a Sec D!

The pictures are awful but I rather like him; not sure why you would need to 'restart' a horse that has been off for four months? I have a niggling feeling that maybe that is an excuse for him not to be ridden when viewed.

He's certainly built like a mountain hare in those photos and I'd think explosion could be why the story about needing restarted. an 8yr old horse been off work for 4 months and its needs started from scratch. Avoid avoid avoid.

From August to Now is not so long a time off work that a horse would need re-starting, unless when last ridden in august it was a maniac!
Most (normal) horses can/should be able to have a few months off work without needing re-backed. In fact all the point-to-pointers manage fine and they have May to October off, and even some horse's which miss a whole season are fine.
Hmmmmm?

My 4yo wasnt ridden from July til 3 weeks ago, people came to view her, girl got on & she went like she had been ridden all the time she hadnt.
He looks more like a youngster but should come up quite easily & is nicely bred. A bolshy 8yo sect D can be a pain in the proverbial but once youre through that can be wonderful. Try & get more info, think carefully & take it from there.
Thorneyside cobs are pretty good & can make super ridden cobs

This is more or less like the section D I got, although I didn't have that description as he wasn't advertised - I contacted the stud directly and they had a 7yr old, hadn't been ridden for ages, never schooled, never seen traffic, but told he was very laid back. He is amazing. That's good breeding, the THorneyside stuff so it's well worth a look.

I do like his breeding, so worth a look, definitely.

If you have the time knowledge to do a restart, and it all feels genuine, then he may be no more of a gamble than buying any horse!

Not good photos.
Possibly been backed recently. On phone now but was gelding? Possibly entire for a while for breeding first with good bloodlines? Huge number of reasons. Plenty to avoid and plenty to not worry about.
If you see him take a second pair of eyes who isnt likely to fall in love and miss things ;)
If they say he's been ridden a while I'd want tacked up too (and not mentioned til day before) so you know your not buying something who's got an easily spotable issue. And I'd be getting on paper that he specifically doesn't have x,y,z and proper vetting.
If you can handle a potential problem then fine, but if gut says no, walk.
I'm also assuming they mean this august... And its not an old advert stuck back up?

As I said earlier - I bought mine directly from a stud - he had sired several foals, then they sold him, bought him back, had him gelded, then he was just knocking around for a year till I phoned them up - similar sounding sort of thing. If I looked at the story of mine in retrospect, I say "steer clear" lol

Can't help looking at this ad - That seems rather cheap for such a "nice" horse. I'd only just seen the price. Also, the word "project" sounds suspicious.

Hi,

Dont know if this is any help. But i saw his advert in novemeber, and rang the owners up. She said they had backed him their self. He had only been used as happy hacker. The work he had done was basic, just rode around the lanes. She also sent me so photos, i thought he was narrow for a welsh cob.

I'm not sure welshies should be cow hocked ;) though I'm not sure he is, although he looks quite straight behind in the summer pic (from what you can see of his legs) he is standing very toe out but very under him self behind in the winter pic so ditto horserider I would be checking for soundness.

I would also want to know what he was doing pre august/has done.

hello talk thank you for all your comments..much appreciated and really helpful....over and above though my gut instincts are screaming no, though I'm drawn to him, I'm going to avoid :)

You have to trust your gut OP.

That said :D apart from bad pictures, this little chap has lovely breeding.
Thorneyside always have a chunk of a body and a pretty pony head, spot on for what a welsh d should be, to me anyway :)

You will never know unless you actually went and saw him really.

I know, I looked at his sire on google (i think!) and he was lovely- but I'm really going to listen to my gut instinct- not like me to be sensible!

The way he is standing with his hind legs right under him in the last (most recent) pic, scream back pain.....................which may explain the whole sold from the field/needs restarting. May however just be a bad pic. Avoid or approach with caution!

No be sensible. Mine is by Guvnor and is the bees n knees. Smartest horse I've ever had. They are built like a brick poop house so if naughty can take some handelling. Ok if your sure of the history but I agree this one could be too much of a gamble.
