I have spent new year's day sorting out my horse that got injured in the field today, he is a 16.3 tb who is pretty laid back most of the time but gets stressed out when the people that own the two ponies in the adjoining field turn up and start moving them about/ riding etc. I have asked numerous times to let me know if poss when they are due to come up ( its my land) or at the least phone me if he starts being a pratt.
Today I decided to take the dogs for a walk and discovered my boy lathered up having churned up his field and with a gash in his leg. The other people were up in the field not bothered at all and carried on as if nothing had happened; to cut a long and horrible story short, 6 hours later my boy was returned to his field with 7 stitches and a vey heavily bandaged leg, antibiotics and bute and lots of fingers crossed :(
I feel awful as this could have been avoided with a text or a call and now am thinking I need to get a couple of youngsters who need a loving home to come and keep my boy company. I have enough land and shelter to accomodate some extra ponies but don't know if there are any sales coming up near Hampshire or where's the best place to find some inexpensive boys?

Large glass of wine and choccies to anyone reading this essay and especially to any advice! I know I need a large glass of something!

Really sorry to hear about your horse, not a great start to the year for you both, hope he heals soon.
I am not sure about your local sales in Hampshire but you can pick up some very cheap youngsters in general

Bless him poor lad. What about rehoming a companion from one of the rescues. I bet they're desperate for homes right now.

Not a nice start to the year. We used to have an old horse who would get himself in a similar state. Have you thought about maybe taking on a rescue horse instead of buying a youngster? I calmer, maybe older horse more your horses size may be better than little ponies. There was an article on this H&H homepage only the other day about how the Blue Cross are desperate to find homes for their larger companion horses.

I am looking at new forest or welshies or something similar I think. I have had a quick look at some rescue centres but don't know if there is anything local as I know most of the centres prefer to rehome locally to help with spot checks etc. But if anyone can point me in the direction of something I have missed please do!

Can you not just Google Companion Horse Free and your area and see what comes up? Someone might even want to loan an old horse out as a companion. If not, i'd try rehoming centres. I'd also be thinking of finding some different more responsible people to take on the other field you have and loose the numpties that clearly have no concern for your horse! Good Luck :)

I'd have though WHW glenda spooner farm is probably close enough to you judging from you location but I could be wrong. They're in Somerset but I expect they cover most of the south west on their travels.

It's pants isn't it. I went to get Brown in today and he has wrecked himself, or been kicked, not sure which yet. He has been off for 8 months and was due back into work today - he would have been in 3 weeks ago if it had not been for the snow. Now instead of riding him I have xrays etc to look forward to instead. Hope you get sorted with companions, try calling one of the rescue centres, thay may know of something local to you. Hope your boy is feeling better soon.
PS I have poured a large glass x

sorry to read you news, i would also look at taking a rescue on from a welfare centre, that way how ever many you take you will be helping double that amount as you will free up places for more neglected horses out there that are needing a place at a welfare centre.
Also maybe time to get rid of the idiots who share your place they obviously have no respect for your horse

hi there,

do you use facebook? if so find the group horse chit chat there are lots of people on there giving ponies away free to a good home! i know in yorkshire youngsters are selling for around £80 at york horse sales. Also try www.adtrader.co.uk you can put your post code in and only select horses in your area. people are desperate to rehome at the minute.

All the very best of luck! and hope your boy makes a swift recovery!

Thankyou everyone! I will give the rescue centres a call on Tuesday when hopefully the dust will have settled and see if they have anything suitable. As much as I wish that the people will change and it will all be ok ( they are friends?!) this is not the first time at all and it could have been a whole lot worse. I think it may be easier all round if its just me with my tb and some friends for him...
They don't seem to be upset about what has happened, at least only in the fact that I've suggested it's to do with them!

I had the same problem with Archie when the horses in the next paddock were taken out for a ride or to the yard. I did ask the owner to text or ring me when they planned to ride but in hindsight I thought it was a cheek on my part, they pay their rent and are entitled to come and go without having to think about me. This isn't a dig at all just I was in the same position and that was my thinking. Horses have accidents, unfortunately, and although the risk has been increased by having horses in the fields next door it could have happened, albeit in a different scenario, at any time.

If you are really worried perhaps get a companion or two, like you said but this is more hassle for you or keep your land to yourself and don't rent the fields.

As for Archie, he has slowly settled, getting used to things but is left to get on with it, pretty much, if he decides to have a paddy.

I really hope your horse recovers quickly and you can get things sorted.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Have you looked at the NFED website - there are loads of cheap ponies on there just looking for someone like you. Perhaps you could post an ad on there (its the New Forest area). Silly question but if its your land do you have to have these people there? They don't sound very responsible.
There is the South Hants Horse & Pony Rescue (think that's what they are called). They rehomed two horses from the yard next to me when the owner died in a car accident. They regularly hold table top tack sales locally in Wickham so they are around this area somewhere. I am based east of Winchester. Hope that helps you. Good luck with your horse.

Think you have been very unlucky with your sharers. I'd give them notice to leave and find someone to share who is more considerate. Possibly someone whose "herd" includes a retired horse/pony so your horse will always have company.

The people who have use of some of our paddocks do so for free as they are friends so haven't really thought that I'm not entitled to ask them to let me know what there plans are and also its our home so its nice to know when extra people maybe about...

Have just started browsing some of the rescue centres and had a quick look on Nfed, I hope I can get something sorted soon as having horses in this weather is hard enough without all this extra stress and worry, my poor boy has a luminous green leg and is not impressed!

Well if its your land they having, don't you think they owe you and your horse a little respect, with a telephone phone call, sounds they really aren't friends as they must have seen him, getting himself into a tiswoz and couldn't be bothered. I like to be treated how I'd treat other people. With Respect.
I'd give them notice and would worry about them cause they don't seem to worry about you and yours.

Bless him, hope your boy is feeling better very soon.

Look on NFED classifieds there are usually cheap NF's advertised on there.
