Im so glad I went ahead with the op all the worrying over his age ws for nothing as the vet couldnt belive how old he is or how young I say in front of him cant say that number you know!! 20 year's young. I've owner him for 12 years. Now we've just got to take it slowing- try telling him that on his walk's!! Luckly he havnt been too bad just a bit joggy here and there can't blame him!!

Really glad he is recovering well, my horse had a similar op in Nov last year on a front hoof and was on box rest for over 3 months. He has only just come sound enough to come off the bute about 3 weeks ago. Hopefully they will both keep getting better and make full recoveries. Fingers crossed. Best wishes for your boy.

How big was his?? Dont know how Beau not on bute even the vet is very surpised over it but is very glad he is doing well. I've just recived his boot will try it on tommorrow fingers crossed it works!! Hope your carrys on getting better. Did you come across any other problems with it??

what a lovely horse and what a horrific problem to have to go through. I am just so amazed what they can do for our horses these day.

You are very lucky that he is being such a good patient and that is half the battle. I sincerely hope he recovers well and keep us all posted x

Hi, not had any problems as such he was just very lame for a very long time. He is still not quite right but a big improvement now. He has his hole filled with what looks like poly filler by the blacksmith. Think I just have to wait for his hoof to grow out now and hope fully he will come completely sound. The vet said it was quite a large one and they had to operate in 2 parts to make sure they got rid of it all. Blacksmith looked at his other hoof last time he was out to shoe him and said hmmmm there is a bit of white line separation here...... Its probably nothing but........ AAArrrrrggggghhhhhh got my fingers crossed its just a bit of white line disease but knowing my luck. :-( Vet said he never seen a horse have more than one before and that is probably just white line disease too. Fingers crossed.

Keeping fingers crossed that it's not another one!! Beau used to throw absecess every 6 months or so on this foot didnt think much of it untill I changed farriers he was the one to spot it whist prepare the foot. The only thing that bug me was that the outer part of the foot white line was strected compare to the inside which was much tighter. Now I know why. Hopefully Beau will have filler in next month. Just got to wait and see. His also went into his pedal bone too.

My horse has just had an op to remove a Keratoma from his near front, his was very large, there is alot of bone exposed but he has taken it well, and is no longer being sedated to have the dressings changed.

im not expecting him back for at least another 4 weeks.
They have put a plastic shoe on mine though, did your have one of these on for a while?

Beau's one was much bigger then thought at first. He was suppose only stay in for 5 day's at the vet but as the pedal bone wasnt coverd enough he stayed for 7 day's.This is Beau's shoe. I have to undo the bolts to clean the frog once or twice a week. He havnt got a plastic shoe just a normal one apart from the side cilp. My farrier made it as the cilp would be right where the hole is. Beau was sedtaed for change of dressing's once at home and then the next was when he got shod. He will be due in a few week's as he only lasted 3 and half week's before clenecers started to come up and a very good amount of growth too. Hoping next time no sedated for shoeing will see what vet and farrier say's. How come your's staying so long at the vet's?? Hope he carrys on well.

Well they have said probably four weeks.
but say 6 and if its before its a bonus.

He is a redwings pony, so is having the op there, as thats what they wanted to do in the end. He had extensive amount done here before he went. However while the operated they found the Keratoma was large, and there is a heck of a alot of pedal bone showing, there is a large dent where the tumour was. So they are keeping him until he is no longer medicated.

This was his xray, what we thought was a fracture, actually wasnt it was part of the abscess but we didnt know that when I circled it on this pic:

This is what the new farrier found and said think's it a keratoma.

Xray of it and shows up other problems too which are being dealt with now.

I havnt got any photos whist he was at the vets.

I saw a youtube cilp on a pony from a centre it was done in the school. I did ask wheter it could be done at home as he not a great traveler and a bugger to load too. No such luck so off he went to vet's. He loaded well to go therewas a bugger to come home took nearly half a hour of him refuseing to move foward just planeted his feet!! Got him in with food. that was the most stressfull part of all of this. As I know the op would go well as he was in very good hands. I worried more over loading and traveling then the op!!

The pic of the bottom of the hoof is almost identical.

Thats a link to the bottom of teds foot once vet had done some diggin after we burst the abscess.

I was told they are quite rare, but seems quite a few people have them.

Have you seen Shoestring eventings site?
Her horse has had the same thing, and she has updated pics regulary.

Can't see your's on Facebook? Yes I thought the same untill I done some reseaching and found out quite a few have been op on. My farriers seen one when he was training and is quite exicted over this. I send photos over both to the vet and farrier when I change dressings. Which is twice a week at the moment.
