Just to say thanks, and as I said before JM, I would happily give you a few quid towards your scrapheap rescues - whether they go on to be useful ridden/useful companions or to a decent end at Potters.

Just because I am not so active any more (husband and puppy put pay to that!) I want to say I am still right behind the work you guys are doing. Recent developments are very encouraging and I'll watch with interest for any more updates
Thank you GN for all your letter-writing efforts - I'm sure letters from people like you were the catalyst for DEFRA issuing their advice on French 'rescues'.

Absolutely agree.
To all those who have said on this thread, that they would like to help, could I suggest that it would help ENORMOUSLY, if they could put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard), and make it known how strongly they feel about the import issues, and the loopholes in the TPA.
People power really is the way forward, as has been proven.

Hey, listen, you're doing a fab job and you should all be proud. It makes me sad to think that horses in need in this country are being passed over in favour of the search for kudos by those 'rescuing' the french horses.

That's a huge part of the problem.........people looking for that 'extra feelgood factor' without stopping to think what would be best for the horse.
I haven't sent any PM's but have been behind you guys from day one, and have offered, and still offer, any support I can. Just let me know how I might be able to help
I am completely behind the reform of rules regarding the import of foreign horses, always have been and always will be.
I am completely behind the vetting of organisations who pull on heartstrings to import horses that really should be slaughtered at their current location.
I have always been adament about the fact that I hate to see horses being allowed to live when they have no quality of life, in this country and any country throughout the world.
I am completely for *outing* organisations that mis-sell animals to those with big hearts.
However, I am against witch hunts and bitching. The cause does not need this to hold gravitas, and to be frank lowers the tone of a very, very important issue.

That is very well said. I have sat in the wings reading all of this since around January time. I joined all the sites that do the so called rescue thing.
I don't like it, I don't like the emotional blackmail. I also joined the french rescue forum and read that.
As you have said though the bitching and witch hunt mentality upset me and for that reason I have kept quiet about all of it.
I was reading another thread yesterday I think it was and people were congratulation another member for esposing something on another thread.
I read that one too and found it to be nasty and all rather playground.
I do not want to put down what you do ladies as I am sure you do it with the best of intentions. I just think that you need to cut out the personal comments and stick to the horses welfare, otherwise how do you expect to be taken serious?
Everyone tries very hard to keep it serious - however, there have been a lot of personal threats - quite scary to be honest - against those who have worked so hard to try and make a change.
Sometimes people let off steam. It's not always the wisest thing do but it does happen. Sometimes, people allow themselves to be drawn into arguments against there better judgment and it does get personal.
That said, I don't think anyone involved is as concerned with their reputation and what people think about them as they are about the horses and suffering they have seen and been told about.
At the end of the day if the law changes and the British horse herd is more protected, then I suppose it's worth getting called names for sometimes being out of order in what you say.

Exactly.
The whole process has been quite frustrating at times, and some people have gone out of their way to discredit us in whatever way they can.
Tempers have flared occasionally, but there isn't one person I can think of, in all my years on HHO, who hasn't been out of order at some point in their lives.
Anybody who wants to throw dirt can do so. I, and I am sure many of us, have plenty we could throw back if we were so inclined. Nobody is perfect.
However, I am really not interested in courting popularity, so if people want to criticise, then let them. I am more interested in the bigger picture.
We are making positive strides towards towards protecting yours, mine, and everybody elses horses in Britain.
It's about the horses. Simple as.
