A nutritionalist was at our yard the other day, shes from a feed company, saw my lad in the field whilst on her visit and told me she thought my wee lad needed to be on different feed because apparently he was standing wonky, his legs turned out and was worried about OCD..
Naturally it made me worry about him and spun me a yarn trying to get me to buy this feed which was ludicrously priced, and i could get something a hell of a lot cheaper which ive used before and he did quite well on.

So i thought id get a second opinion. Had my vet out today who had me trot him up, and looked at him for a bit, gave him a feel and announced that he was very well put together, and that he was exceptionally straight for his age. even said that a little bit of turning out wasnt a problem.

Which leaves me feeling a little bit annoyed at the feed lady, as i think she may have just been exaggerating a wee tad in order to get me to spend ludicrous poundage on feed that he didnt really need.
Grrr, sorry! just needed a bit of a vent!

Cheeky aren't they?! Such a shame we don't also get expert advice when marketing tactics in Mags/on TV tell us our skin is too wrinkley, our hair is too grey or our teeth aren't white enough- it would save us all a fortune!!

Lol very cheeky although i suppose there only doing there job trying to sell. But its like my farrier saying my horse has done a tendon in, when he had nothing wrong with it and was 110% sound.

It is the same witrh dogs. Vets recommend the feeding of our canines, when all they have is 6 hours lecture by somefeed company, correct me all vets, but at least 10 have told me so.

I feed my dogs BARF, Bones And Raw Food.

They pray on our insecurites.

Complain to the company she works for and ask them to let you know what her credentials are for diagnosing physical issues with horses.

That is very cheeky - shouldn't that kind of "salesmanship" have some sort of Trading Standards rule against it? I mean, it's basically fraud if they get you to buy it based on an entirely made-up condition (although as ali_m says, the same could be said of almost every cosmetics company). I agree that vets can be just as bad - when we had our old JRT, the vet tried to make us spend thousands on stuff he didn't really need. He insisted on having the poor animal neutered, even though he was so old that putting him under anaesthetic was incredibly risky and his wild oat sowing days were looong gone! Poor little mutt.

Gails - a feed company did come to our uni last year to speak to us/"teach us" about canine nutrition. Roughly three quarters of the class or so didnt stay past the first lecture (I didnt even last one lecture!!). None of us gives a toss about the feed companies our college sells 5 diff companies' feed and uses 3 diff companies for hospital cases. In some cases I can certainly see that recommending precription diets can benefit an animal by helping to manage a disease mediated by diet but for daily maintenance feed for a happy healthy mongrel I dont see whats wrong with pedigree or the likes. Most of the cheaper crap is cheap for a reason...beacuse its crap. :P
The prescription diets are advisable for the sick dog as MOST clients dont have the time/ inclination to cook and prepare fresh food for their dog on a daily basis. All well and good if you can, but packaged foods are there for convenience. That said there is only one company doing prescription diets (that i know of).

Anyway, to cut to the chase, only a handful of vets from my uni would advocate ANY particular dog food over another. Most of us dont really care about the free bags (so horrible I dumped both of the ones they gave me in the bin) from RC or white coats from Hills. They certainly wont be affecting the advice we give clients about food.
I should add, we also had nutrition lectures from 2 of our own lecturers with no influence from the feed companies. These lectures gave us a much better idea of the nutritive quality of ALL brands of food and i doubt we will be codded by the "big-name" companies after that!

I know the feeling!
Hate feed people some times!

A different feed guy, from ususal, delivered hay to our yard the other day, and I was the only one up there.
To help set the scene I'm blonde, 20ish, and was looking girly (for once) as I had just arrived from work. He started to try and give me a whole lecture, in a very condecending tone of voice, on the pros and cons of the hay (lucerne, medow mix, oaten, rye mix and clover mix) he supplied and was delivering.

He really, really should not have picked an Agriculture student to give that talk to, and as I wasn't having the best day his tone annoyed me so much that I turned around and ID'd (common and Latin names) all the grass species in the bales that I could see, several weeds that were also present and then when he brought up nutrition, gave him a run down on the nutritional value of each. =)
Happily he then shut up and left me alone.

I guess that sounds a bit rude, I tried not to be but his condecending tone really annoyed me. Apparently being a nerd at Uni pays off =)
