A bit of a difficult question

If your dog has something hanging out of its bum, do you leave it, or try and pull it out. I have noticed something from my Dobermans bottom this evening, it looks like string, not sure, but about three inches in length (not a worm)

I was tempted to give it a tug, but thought better of it. What is the correct thing to do under these circumstances.

I don't know about the right thing to do but I would be wanting to find out what it is so would be gently easing it out (use a tissue or something) as long as your dog doesn't object. If it is stuck fast then I'd either lubricate the area and try again, give a dose of liquid parafin to shift it and if those don't work, pop him down to the vets in the morning. I think it'll be a worm, nothing unusual about that particularly if it's a youngish dog but they usually get expelled naturally when the dog empties itself - unless your dog has helped itself to a joint of meat and is passing the string it was tied with!.

My bitch eats long grass and she often has probs passing it and gets distressed so I have to give her a helping hand

It's probably grass but unless you're sure I wouldn't be pulling anything out of a dogs bum! I'll be fascinated to know what it was though!
 
filly190, has your dog eaten anything unual, like string, i would help it out (but if it doesnt budge, take him to vet, (it could be stuck).

When my dog was a pup, I had to pull a four-inch piece of rattan from her bum (I'm talking about a dog that weighed 12lbs at the time). Silly girl had been chewing on my shoe basket.

To this day, I occasionally have to pull one of my hairs out in order to get the poop flowing again

Being a bobtail breed, she doesn't have the leverage a dog with a tail has, you see.
 
we had a dish cloth come out in a similar way, i pulled it out gently, if theres any resistance to a gentle pull id leave it though, dumb dogs huh.
