Hannah and Grace are next to each other in the stables. Hannah is obviously in the big 16ft x 11ft one which she has been in for quite some time, and Grace is in an 11ft x 11ft. Someone is moving off our yard and the YO has offered me one of the corner boxes (like Hannah's) for Grace which is at the other side and the stables are in a square.

At the moment having them next to each other is quite easy for brushing up etc, but Grace's box is just about adequate for her size wise whereas this other one I have been offered is 16ft x 11ft like Hannah's.

So would you move her to the much larger stable and them not be next to each other, or would you leave her where she is? She is settled where she is now although still gets a bit worked up when Hannah goes out but her mirror has made such a difference to this.

Thanks,

Rebecca x

Personally I would move her. It won't be a huge change for her as it will still be on the same yard and the more room the better for a mare when foaling. My foaling boxes are absolutely massive and I wouldn't have it any other way as once there is a little one bounding around in them they soon take up all of the room and in a small space mum is more liable to get pissed off.

sorry, I thought that Grace was also in foal for some reason. If she is happy in the 11 X 11 box then by all means leave her be but a bigger box is always nicer in my opinion as they have the freedom to move around and I also don't feel so guilty about having to keep them in on horrible days if they've got a big box.

Yes, I wouldn't be moving her until after that as it is having its walls reboarded before anyone moves in and the people are not moving until next week.

It is a lovely big stable, much bigger than what she is in now, it might even be 16ft x 12ft now I think about it as it is a different shape to Hannah's. Grace does find it easy to lie down but I have noticed that she looks quite big in the one she is in at the moment (length wise).

No... the corner stables (the bigger ones) are in each corner of the square. There are only three, and Hannah has one of them and needs a large one even when she is not in foal because she has a tendancy to get colic and has become cast in one of the smaller ones once which is why we moved into one of the bigger ones.

It is only for me that I want them next to each other because it is easier. Hannah couldn't care less where Grace was, and I am wondering whether it would help Grace's attachment issues if she was not in the next stable?

It may help a bit to move Grace into the bigger stable but doesn't this mean the box next to Hannah will become available to a new livery? Would Hannah happily accept a new horse next door to her once she has her foal?

Yes, she is not really bothered by things like this to be honest... She had a new horse move next to her on the other side about a month or so ago and didn't even look at him. She bit him on the nose one morning and that is the most interest she has shown.
