3 weeks tonight our mare was pts. We knew we couldn't jump straight into replacing her, having had her since she was rising 4 - nearly 12 years! We love her so much and miss her so much, and she did so much for my gelding and his confidence. A truly beautiful, wonderful mare who we will all miss. But riding is something my husband and I do together, and sadly it doesn't work as well with one horse, although he does try his best riding alongside me on his 10hh Marin Mountainbike

Well it's only been 3 weeks and we still know we don't want to rush into anything, but we do have a field at my in-law's house that we can use until we have built stables/manege on it (we keep George and kept Sparkle at DIY livery). We have talked a little tonight (it's become easier to talk about the future over the last few days for some reason, after I saw a 5 year old mare for sale. She had a foal at foot and was in foal again, had been broken but then used as a broodmare.

I am not sure whether she is the right one for us because she's 5 and rather than backing her, they used her as a broodmare, which makes me a bit shakey, not because I think she doesn't have potential, though. She looks lovely and the foal looks stunning (he's black welsh d and the mare is chestnut welsh d - Sparkle was welsh d and so is George!). However, I think we have decided to maybe find a mare who has a foal at foot or something along those lines

My husband likes mares and he would bring the mare back into work, bring her on just like he did with Sparkle. Meanwhile, we'd break the foal once it's old enough, bring it on and it may prove to be a good option for me as George starts to slow down into his 20s (he's 15/16 now).

Anyway, I just thought I'd say that because I'm feeling happy. Nothing is set in stone but it's a good option that we are seriously considering. My husband said he'd never get another horse and he's slowly come round a bit as he knows it is a hobby we enjoy together. We are in no rush, though

You poor thing - I know exactly how you feel. It took me a while to get another horse after loosing all three of mine in just three months

And, I am also thinking along the same lines as you, my mare is 15 now and if I put her in foal next year, the youngster will be ready to bring on when she is in her 20's.

Lots of luck to you and have fun finding a new horse

PS: I was in Wellington today, took car back to garage and bought fish! There is a surprising amount of ginger people in Wellington!! - there that made you laugh didn't it

Actually I thought Wellington was great - lots of really good shops. I bought hoover bags in the hardware shop, cakes in The Crusty Rolle and did a bit of shopping in Somerfield!!

Although I have to admit I am not impressed with Bruford Garage

Excellent Garden/Pet shops on the road to Taunton

Have you seen the size of the Koi Carp? - £195 each!!! I couldn't believe it!

My son pointed out the numerous amount of ginger haired people!! There were no less than three of them working in Somerfield!

Now you are going to tell me you are ginger and work in Somerfield!!!

Glad you may have found 2(!) nice horses. I lost my boy to colic 6 weeks ago and like you am now comng round to the idea of having another one.

Oh Carrie, I'm so pleased for you all. Sometimes things are just meant to be and it would be lovely to think that another ned out there needs you as much as you need her and just maybe you have found each other. You have a little space in your heart and your home for another ned to love so go for it and welcome her ... but make sure she understands she's got a HUUUUGE act to follow! xxxxx

Awww, thank you everyone

Ravenwood - Wellington's been voted best middle sized town several years running hehe. The problem is that the shops keep closing. Crusty Rolle is great, though. The Blackdown Nurseries is great... but let's say one of their sub-traders lack scruples!!! Fab pet shops, though

I live near Bulford Garage - the other side of the Railway Bridge near Fox's Factory and have to say they have tried to screw us over before as well. I like Wellington, really and it will be fab when the new cycle network is in and the roads are finished because we plan to move George out to the in-law's place which is just off Chelston Roundabout and will be a 5 minute cycle from my house

There are ginger people working in Somerfield and one of them is particularly grumpy but manages a smile for my husband hehe. I don't work there and have blonde hair, so you are quite safe

Thank you to everyone. I still think it is too soon, but my husband's birthday is 27th September and seeing as Sparkle was his 22nd birthday present (technically!!), it may be apt to do something similar again, but we will see as we are both still very very upset. My birthday is 7th October so it's possible we could have a joint thing!

Anyway, thank you again

Carrie, am so pleased thigs are starting to look a bit brighter, it will take a long time to get over such a tragedy, you are not replacing Sparkle, and nothing will take away the love you had for her.
My little dog was put to sleep in sad circumstances seven years ago, and i still cry about her, but it has become easier to remember the cute things about her, we got another within a week, I guess everyone is different. Not to replace little Ellie but to fill that great big void..... Sorry for rambling and dont know if Ive wrote it quite right, but big hugs and good luck x

Hi and thank you everyone

Rode out for 3 hours today, phew! Got soaked to the core... poor George was sweaty as could be, though!

I haven't decided about the livery. It's difficult because we are not sure how long until we can get stables on my in-laws' land. It would be unsettling for G to keep moving him, so while we are thinking seriously about it, I'm not wholly convinced that it would be a wise move at the moment, particularly because we have worked out that it's going to cost £3000 more per year to keep 2 horses on part livery instead of our current DIY! We will see
