For the last few rides out alone, Bobbi has been napping a lot; planting, going backwards, trying to turn around, that sort of thing. I was really beginning to think about retiring her, she's 25 and I just thought she wasn't enjoying being ridden any more. A friend came over with her dog last week and joined us on foot, Bobbi needed a little encouragement a couple of times but wasn't too bad.
Today we went out with another local lady and her gorgeous pony. We only walked, but Bobbi was striding out, led the way (even on the scary bits) and thoroughly enjoyed herself. We had to keep slowing down as we were leaving the other horse behind!
Looks like she just needs the right company! I'm very relieved, it was lovely to see her so happy when out.
Fingers crossed we can meet up again.

Could it be that her eyesight isn't what it once was now she is 25, meaning she doesn't feel as safe as she once did heading out alone?
I agree with a shetie bit me. Eyesight can bring many changes. My mare simply threw her head back putting reins over head but also gave reasons to her other issues. For peace of mind get eyes checked. Eyes are often forgotten but so important to horses. Even though her sight was failing(she was 14) with my vets support I carried on riding the amazing mare till my vet and I decided it was time to retire.
