Previous people on the yard left because of problems with the neighbours, it got nasty and the police were involved (called by yard not neighbours) we moved on knowing this and have made a big effort to be polite, friendly and have always asked if we need to harrow the school or do anything that might be loud. We haven't had any issues with them and they have always spoke and seem friendly enough.

Took lorry out today at 10am with one of mine on it, got back at 1pm and my gate to the paddock was wide open and one pony was out (the other hadnt noticed!) there's no way that it can be opened by accident, it's a slide bolt with a spring. I went in the paddock that morning to get my lad out and it wasn't open then (I used a different gate, there's 3)

So obviously I'm upset and a bit worried :( it's private land so no walkers and no access. I can see where it looks like someone has climbed over a disused gate at the bottom of the yard and its opposite the neighbours house :( I can't accuse them because in fairness I don't know it was them, I'm hoping the pony has rubbed her bum on it and somehow opened it but I think that's being optimistic. Just gone and bought chains and locks and fitted them.

A bit of a pointless post really but I've never had this problem before and it's made me feel really anxious and a bit upset :(

I can understand your worries, however don't presume because it is private land you won't get idiots :(

Our farm it totally private, not public access at any point, and the amount of people that causally walk around it it is unbelievable, we even had AMA and his 2 dogs shouting through the window a couple of weeks , walking his dogs and asking for directions !!!!

Sadly it now means we can't allow our 7 year old daughter to walk a few yards to her grandparents without us watching over her any more :(

Get a big chain and a lock for the gate, and give all the liveries a key !

I would quietly approach them and ask if they saw anything, as it looked like someone came over that gate near them. Then tell them that you are going to (or considering) be running electric fencing along the fence and over the gateway to try and stop anything happening.
May be someone was being "helpful" if ponies were calling one another, and may be that they did see something.
But always a nightmare and worry if something like that happens

I agree with above. I would go and tell them to keep their things safe as there are clearly criminals operating in the area and as a result you are going to be getting some covert CCTV so that everyone, including them, is kept safe......it might make them a bit wary in future!

There are some right strange neighbours around sometimes. My next door neighbour is a lovely farmer. His neighbour on the other side is a nasty weird farmer whom everybody seems to have fallen out with. (Except for me as I tend to avoid that sort of stuff)
The nasty weird farmer used to move one of my horses into the nice farmers land (unless my horse could open 3 gates and close them after herself) I assume to try to get me and the nice farmer to have a falling out. We had a good laugh about it instead wondering how strange some folk can be

As previous posters said, go to them saying you're worried there are criminals around looking for things to steal.

That's a good idea, I didn't see anyone about tonight when I went to check on them and put the chickens away but I'll go round tomorrow and say I was a bit bothered someone was snooping around. Hopefully with that and the locks on the gates if it was them I'll have no more issues. I'd rather they came and shouted at me if theres a problem (I hate confrontation!) than do something to the horses :(
