Right ... advice please ... my trainer told me on friday to cut out my mares feeds for the time being as she was getting alittle to excited... i posted on here on firday with JUST HAY !! and got some really sound advice .. thing is ... i think she might be losing weight .. i was giving her a bowl scoop of Alfa A oil and a double handful of calm and condition .. morning and night .... she has no turn out at the moment and is getting lunged every other day and ridden once a week ... so since friday she has been getting unlimited hay 24/7 ... i wouldnt want her to loose weight as she was a little tucked up when i got her a month ago and in that month she has started to rounden up and generally look good ... any advice ?

soz for the essay !!

xx

Keep at it for another week or so and see how you feel then. Do you have a weight tape - if not a piece of string will do. Mark off today the length around her girth and do it again in a weeks time.

Agree that she did seem to be getting a lot. If you really feel the need to give her something how about a handful of pony nuts with an apple sliced up?

yeah .. i thought of that today .. measuring her girth ... will do that later ... do u reckon just a handful of the alfa A oil morning and night ??? if she does lose weight

I'm not surprised she was getting excited with only come out of her stable every other day to be lunged

Is there no where you can turn her out if only for an hour for a buck and a roll? The school maybe whilst you muck out?

What breed is she?

Have you thought about pony nuts but in a nut ball so she has to work for them and keep herself occupied in the process?

Well start with one issue first, and take it from there. I would review after a week or so.

Is there a reason she can't go out for longer?

Debs, I would say ad-lib hay and a food ball given the work she is doing should be enough, but as Amy says keep it up for another week and if you still think she is loosing too much weight give her a little bit of food to start off with and then increase it until you think you have the balance right.

Ah, ok - so you do a sort of rotational thing then, that makes sense.

Well, section D's are notoriously good doers, and that combined with lack of exercise and turnout won't help.

Got any piccies??

My welsh section d mare has a tolarance to suger so suger beet, carrots, licks etc send her loopy and itchy. So she has restricted turn out in the day, a 15lb small holed hay net at night. A scoop of Dodsell and Horrel Safe and sound, morning and night and thats it. She fit enough to do 3 hour hacks with enthusiasum over the moors and looks well.

I know many horses go nuts on alfa a, with or without the oil!
I'd try giving hi fi or similar, as although its not as fattennig it doesn't contain so many whizz bangs either!

Alfa oil has been shown to turn some horses nutty - just too high an energy food for some - especially native. As you really need to give her fibre rather than anything else you should perhaps change the alfa oil to a basic hifi - hifi lite. That way you will be feeding fibre but not the energy and it sounds like you don't need energy.

If you want to keep on the Alfalfa because it is conditioning try the Dodson and Horrell Alfalfa. My friends horse goes a bit whizzy on the Alfa A but is fine with the D&H one.

Welsh section D's are designed to live off nothing and live out 24/7 on the top of mountains so she should not be loosing weight if she is getting ad lib hay and just being lunged.

I would over the next couple of months worm her using a number of different wormers which contain different active ingredients so that all the different types of worms are killed off. (Your vet will advise you)

I would also give her at least two hours gentle hacking each day as Welsh Section D's need to be worked.

Last bit of advice is find yourself a yard that offers all year turn out. Not fair to keep your horse shut up.
