After 7 years I have finally found the right bit for my horse, yeehaa!. (a little back ground) My horse was given to me with a bad rep' for running off and the old owner would not tell me anymore about his past, he has always been very strong, when you go to trot he wants medium when you cantre he wants gallop, sometimes it feels like he is running away, he is a horse you have never really been able to ride with any lower leg and has to be ridden with only seat back and thigh. he opened his mouth constantly and tucks his chin in his chest. Everything has been tried, strong and mild bits tight and loose nosebands. since ive had him i've had everything checked a milion times, he has a thick tongue, low pallet and parrot mouth, i've tried KK, myler, doubles, bitless the list goes on. but last week i decided to try a split lozenge mouth and OMG i can get my leg on his side and he listens to it, he stops when i asked without having to be stronger than i wanted, he was stretching over his back and reaching for the bit and on saturday i hacked out and he walked.... maybe not amazing to you but to me that's a miracle. i really thought he wa set in his ways. not sure if it will last but for now at least I feel i am riding a horse that is comfortable in the mouth.

Yes please pictures... It sounds like you have my horses twin brother!! Yours isn't a Cavalier son is he??!!!

I too have tried loads of bits mild strong, waterford is great but shreds his mouth!!
Got p*!?ed off with big time round Bishop Burton Novice very very scary!!!

8019 NS Schulung Lozenge Snaffle 16mm diameter 55mm rings

I have just started using this and I got a similar, OMG I am riding a different horse experience. My horse never seemed happy in his mouth and would accept a contact for a few strides then throw his head up despite no problems with his teeth. Tried all sorts then my instructor brought this for him to try and it was literally an immediate improvement, accepting the contact, no head throwing and so much more relaxed, stretching down and a lovely swinging gait. Highly recommended !!!

Funny you should say that, when i was given him, his bridle had a tag on with "cavalier" written on it!! but all i know is he was known only as "Black" for a while, he was given to me and was also given to the owner before me. i think he had been pushed from pillar to post through his life, but that is just a guess
I do not have a photo of the bit but will try and get one

LMAO Foxfolly!

Jiggy_with_it described Cavalier stock to a T!!
My mare is 9 months in foal and still trying to p*** off everytime I ride her.

The major difference i think with this bit is the fact that the lozenge is split and rotates so each side of the bit is independant. i had tried lozenge mouth pieces before and found them useful with other horses but not with this old boy.

I also got given my chap by a friend of a freind who he had pretty well put of riding for good! He is definitely by Cavalier.... as I have his passport, he was bred in ireland out of a irish sport horse mare and imported to the UK as a 4yo. He too is occasionaly known as Black.... its usually followed by Ba*!?rd!! As he's usually pulling faces at someone or trying to eat / kick or just crush a dog / cow/ sheep or anything else that might have the displeasure of accidentaly roaming into his personal space!!!

I definitely think we should have a cavalier owners club!!
For all the poor owners who have mental... (but usually quite talented beasts)!! Have all the other Cavalier owner got arms that are a few inches longer than they used to be like mine??!!!

All the Cavalier offspring I ever see pictues of in H&H are usally bitted upto the back teeth for XC and they all seen to have a similar jumping action.... that kind of you can't tell me how to go... I do it my way and you have no choice about it!!!

Love him, Foxfolly; he's fabulous..got that same 'purposeful' look about him as mine does! Looks the same too, obviously!!

Where is the best place to post a 'Cavalier Club' then!! No doubt there are hundreds of HHO'ers with sore arms and blistered fingers out there...

My boy cant join the Cavalier club but he's black too and has the knickname of the black b******* too. Think its a black horse thing.

Are you sure it isn't a piece of barbed wire with snaffle rings on it???!!!

Yours has got exactly the same expression mine has when he's jumping... do they all do that tucking their chin into their chest thing??

So where should we put our Cavalier owners club thread then??

What a lovely pic...looks deceptively controlled! You can't even tell that it probably tanked off before/and or after the fence!

Mine looks exactly like that when jumping too
