If you can imagine, the run up to Bramham (our first three star) could be slightly stressful, then you would be right!

There I was last week, unwittingly keeping to a seemingly perfect prep timetable with a distinctly calm feeling. Then the wheels fall off, and I get an email from the BE office.

'Do you know your horse hasn't got an FEI passport?'

Yes, I fully well know this fact I said, he doesn't need one unless we compete abroad (could I not of been more mistaken)!

Well. Said the BE office. You need one to compete 3* and above. What!!?? How come my 4* trainer didn't tell me (he assumed I knew) How could I know? I've never been at this level before! Ok, I don't read ALL the rules in the rule book, but I like to think I'm fairly knowledgable in regards to the rules and eccentricities of BE and the FEI by now.

Don't worry said the BE office, if it makes you feel any better we had to do two emergency passports for competitors at Badminton this year (this slightly softened the blow) but I don't know how they didn't have an FEI passport to get past 3* unless they expired?

So I duly sent the passport special delivery on Wednesday, and (stalked)tracked its delivery to BE on Thursday morning. I took Uno to the gallops that day for his last piece of interval training, so contacted BE in the afternoon to check everything was ok.

This is how the conversation went -
BE :You sent it? Me: Yes
BE: When? Me: yesterday, like I said I would
BE:We received it? Me: Yes, you have...I put FAO, the address on the front and back and 'so and so' signed for it.
BE: We will go and look, no not here....Me: (list an amount of expletives as you wish)

Needless to say I had a sleepless night....would I go to Bramham? could I? Is this a sign I shouldn't go? Thinking about HottoTrot's monkey here!

This saga continued until today when finally the passport was found, luckily I have a scanned copy of it on my computer from when I bought him, but no up to date vaccinations so that wouldn't of been much use.

Another lesson today was that my horses BE name is not the exact name on his passport. So unless I want to part with £900 I have to use the 'plain' name on his passport. Since I would rather or need to spend £900 on training, livery or a holiday (there's a thought) I decided the plain name would do just fine.

So we aren't at Bramham yet, and we aren't finished with issues with the passport (microchip no. Not stamped) but the stress has obviously just hit. This was rather a vent than a post but I would just like to say the BE office have been at their finest in the last few days, despite loosing the passport, they have been fantastic in communication and they even gave me a discount for the inconvenience caused, although maybe they didn't need to as I saved money by not eating enough through the stress.

So just in case you were thinking of doing a 3* or even eventing - you need an FEI passport for 3* and above, the competing name has to be the same as the horse's passport name (unless you want to spend £900) and always, always make a copy of a horse passport!

Here's a pic of the little one himself after our gallop at Kelsall, love that face.

A lot of stress for you but at least it's sorted out. I thought you needed an FEI passport for 2*, although something in the back of my mind is saying the rules were changed a few years back - sadly we're not eventing just now and I really miss it especially the 3 day events. Good luck at Bramham and have fun!

Thank you, never required an FEI passport for 2* last year (unless the rules have changed). I've never been to Bramham before, so can't wait to go there.

Poor you :(

For some reason I thought they were needed for 2* and above, but maybe that's Ireland, or I'm just out of date which is more likely..

Anyway - v glad you are sorted..

Fiona

Glad you're sorted out :) Looking forward to the report!

I didn't even know there was such a thing as an FEI passport but as I haven't even got to a BE80 (yet!) I guess I don't need to know

I didn't know about FEI passports either, but as I too have never quite made it to a BE event maybe that's why :o.

I'm planning on maybe going to Bramham, so will keep a look out if we can know yours or the horses name, *promise I'm not a stalker honest :o*.

Thanks Fiona, maybe NI is different? I am still clueless in regards to their rules :-)

I think I only heard of FEI passports when I first started doing Internationals, but for some reason was so sure about them only being necessary for competing abroad.

You can be my first official stalker :-) I'm number 193, he's still called 'Sporting Uno' in the rider program, but don't know whether they will change it to just plain 'Uno II'

Blimey, but that means all that hassle beforehand so the actual event goes smoothly £900 is bonkers money for a name change. Good call on the passport, k have copies of one but not the other, should do that.

I hope you are right Bernster, it is apparently an amount set by the FEI, they charge BE and then BE charge us with a couple of hundred on top of the bill :-0

FEI passports are required for any overseas event and for 3* or above in Britain. They only last for 4 years and then expire.

Did you not get the information from BE when you got your FEI registration number?

Have BE checked his vaccinations while they have had his passport?

I will be your second stalker... Will be there on Thursday and Saturday to watch! Can't wait! Love Bramham.

Hope all is sorted. It was good of the BE office to get in touch, rather than let you turn up and not be able to compete. Could this have happened?

Well tell your monkey that the fact it is getting sorted means you are meant to go!

Good luck what ever the name of the horse you are riding and please give us an update, will be an amazing experience!

I'm afraid that is why I am currently sat on the BE office waiting for them to change my passport into an FEI one. So no, they never told me when I registered FEI and I never read the rule.

Ha, ha. Yes the monkey can go and jump off a cliff at this point. I will most likely do a report on this one. I usually don't do too many write ups of our events as I blog about them also. But I think I can make an exception with Bramham and lots of photos!

Good luck and I am quite impressed with the organisation of the BE office in letting you know.
I registered my girl with BS a couple of weeks ago only to discover the ID sketch in her passport was never filled in! Had to pay £39.95 for a vet to come and do it. Not quite sure how she made it to 5 without it being filled in!

Its a great event, and even better being 5 mins from my house - if you forget anything let me know :)

Thankfully the weather looks like its cooling down a bit, but might still get to 24 on saturday so pack sunscreen. Also might be some thundery weather tomorrow night if you're setting off then x

They must check, by the sounds of it this happens quite regularly!
