This has just come to me...you know how there are so many gadgets on the market, from Pessoa training aids to bouncy stirrups, well, do you think there would be a market for a hire service where people could hire the product and then buy if they like it...a bit like a bit bank?

i don't see why not.
i bought some marquis supergrip horseboots a couple of weeks ago. and the main reason i bought them was that i could try them for 2 weeks first, the cost of that deductable from the price if i purchased. very reassuring... other types of the same sort of boot didn't have that option, and ebay's full of "tried once, company won't take them back but they don't fit my horse" kind of messages as people try to sell the other type...

I think there would be. I know that even simple things, like different nosebands, I would like to test before splashing out as money is very tight. For much more expensive items, like a pessoa, I would definately like to try it out first.
Good idea in my mind.

thanks for that...it just hit me as I was thinking about getting my nag something but didn't want to buy it outright is it didn't work!

It would be really good if you gave decent instructions too (if they weren't already supplied!). I know there are some things I'd like to try but am reluctant to part with a lot of money when I don't know if they're any good!

On a sensible note, do bear in mind that if people return certain items once used they may not be resalable at the original price so would you have “tester” items or have the hire price high enough to offset the drop in value…

This sort of business can work but you'd have to stick to a small range of options to reduce investment in stock.
You need to find out if there is a market for it, what people will pay, and whether there is enough profit margin to deal with damages/postal losses/replacements etc.

Possibly, but as someone pointed out, all the returned items become second-hand and so couldn't be sold to the next person at the full price.
