So Dark Knight and V were entered for their final BE90 at Oasby on Sat and daughter and her mare B were at Eland doing the 80cm Eventer Trial on Sunday, I was groom/ general dogs body for both!

DK had late times on Sat and daughter was looking after Mini DK for the day so the morning was quite leisurely, didn't have to leave the yard till 11.

V travelled well and stood nicely for me to plait him when we arrived, he is a big lad and my arms always ache when I have finished

DK had decided to take V for a bit of a hack before warming up for dressage so I was able to go and walk the course and watch some sj'ing. The ground was spot on and the course fair quite alot of skinnies and a corner in an open field.

Waiting for dressage test

DK was very happy with the way V went in the dressage it is hard to connect such a big horse in a 20 x 40 arena but we both felt that V did his best test of the season. At the end of the test the dressage judge got out of her car to speak to DK, (always worrying !) but it was to say that she thought V was a super horse and when connected a little more would be scoring much higher marks:)

Onto the sj'ing. Have had a few problems with poles coming down so this week have tried something new. V has always been a very difficult horse to bit, even the mildest snaffle can cause him to back off and throw his head, so time to try a hackamore. What a difference a horse who felt his size, going forward and not throwing his head, enabling him to concentrate on the jumps and making 1m20 look like 75 cms at home.

As DK started his round they announced his dressage score 33.5 so pleased with that. Jumped the first 3 nicely then DK just checked him before 4 as he felt he was running on too much (didn't look like it from the floor but I am sure it certainly felt like it on board!) and had it down. Cleared 5 then checked again before 6 and had that down. Jumped the rest beautifully. So alot learnt, just trust V and sit very still, which I think is much easier said than done!

Onto the xc, DK delighted with the way V went, trotted through the water, at the 2 skinny logs and into the corner, so clear with 4 time penalties a good finish to the season

This season has taught DK alot about V and V alot about eventing. The plan for the winter is to try to find a dressage legal bit that V is as happy and as forward in as the hackamore, this could take some time! To go out and do some dressage tests and a bit of sj'ing and to carry on having fun

Love this pic so had to include it

Got home very late knowing it was going to be a long day on Sunday as well

Daughter no2 was very happy that she was having a day competing to herself. Her mare B is an ex racer she is now 16 very set in her ways, is a safe but not easy ride we often say 'B knows Best' which is not always the case!

The eventer trial was sj'ing on surface then onto the xc course no dressage which appealed to Dno2!

B tries to take charge when sj'ing and isn't known for her clear rounds, in fact the only clear round she has had previously was with Dno2, so we were delighted with another

Onto the xc had quite a wait in the warm up and B became a little unsettled so unusually I had to lead her to the start .They set off well and had a very confident clear round, admittedly too fast, but safe. B knows her way around Eland and covers the ground very well. Dno2 now knows how to judge their speed better now as the last time they went round they were much too slow! So again a very pleasing day with a happy horse and a very happy rider

Dark Knight and I would like to say a huge thank you to his very generous sponsor this season we really have enjoyed working with you:)

Thanks for reading coffee and homemade Rockey Road on offer:)

A busy but satisfying weekend :). V is very handsome, remind me how old he is. Very well done D no2 - I know someone who would agree re lack of a dressage test :D.

V sounds a bit like my mare in the contact!! What breed is he?

I've recently tried a Micklem bridle. When she is bad she is worse, but when she softens she is so much better it is scary!!

You've got me wondering about a hackamore now as when we jump I tend to let her have a really long rein as she isn't a puller and just seems happier.......

Old TBs who know everything are the very best :D I had one for 5 years (he was 21 when we got him!) and it was his way or no way and he was the very best. The older he got the wilder he got and by the time he was PTS he was 100% lunatic and it gave me so much confidence. Your girl looks very lovely :D

And, your ginorma horse is lovely :D Sounds like a very very good day! How's your little dun lad?

Thanks RF it was satisfying but I am still trying to recover! V is 9 going on 5, he was a late starter, DK's mum bought him for DK when he was 4 and 17.1 then the blinking thing kept growing, every time he grew he was rested, only stopped at 8 (well over the 18.2 measure so think he is near to 19hh) but still wasn't 'furnished' so has been kept ticking over but not asked alot of till now, he is very precious to us as DK lost his mum suddenly 3 months after she bought V:( Yes the lack of a dressage test was a real highlight;)

Sounds like a super end to the season :) and well done you for being general dogsbody come groom :)

Thanks LJR I enjoy doing the running about as much as competing

MB he is a warmblood, believed to be by Gribaldi, was imported to be a carriage horse, but grew too big:eek: Interesting re the Micklem its something DK has mentioned trying but I will need to investigate to see if they do them in an XF. The hackamore was a bit of a jump in at the deep end we really didn't know how he would react to it, fortunately it was hugely positive, in any snaffle no matter how mild he always doesn't want to take a contact and go forward, he feels like riding a very light in front 16.2. In the hackamore he feels amazing and rides like his size, but I am relived its DK jumping him not me:D

L I know what you mean B has taught the girls so much, she really isn't the easiest horse to ride, and has a 'make me ' streak apparently passed down from her sire Silver Hawk (my boy H is B's son and can be the same earning himself the name at times of Mr R C Git:)

V is a sweety he has the nicest nature but can be a stress head and a worrier but he genuinely wants to please. D has just had a bit of a holiday and is now back in work with Mini DK in charge (biggest sister has returned to Uni so he is allowed his pony back!) I am hoping to get him out over the next few weeks to have go at a walk and trot test.

Homemade rocky road? Yum! What height is V as I know DK isn't small..? The dressage mark was very good considering you don't think you have found quite the right bit for him yet, so very well done :) Great pics - and what on earth made them so bright? Surely it rains 24/7, or is that just us ;)

Super pics of B too, and more of E and his pony chum needed :D

Well done to DK and V! He hacked past me and my OH sitting in our 4x4, and I suddenly realised who he was so grinned at him, and he smiled back but wouldn't have known who I was from adam! Please do apologise and say that the mady in the black 4x4 with red trailer attached wasn't intentionally acting like a psycho but was instead trying to be friendly :D

A lovely positive end to the season and I can't wait to see how they progress next season.

Fab well done to Dno2, looking very confident! Hope she enjoyed it :)

Lovely report :D

They are looking like a partnership, which is grand :D. He's a big lad and getting him all together is a testament to DK's sympathetic training and riding :D

Dno2 did very well indeed :D. I saw her go up the hill - wow that hoss is fit lol :D Beautifully ridden :D

Thank you. We think V is near 19hh:eek: We were very lucky with the weather, a bit gloomy all day Sat but glorious sunshine as they went xc. Sun was a beautiful autumn day couldn't have asked for better.

Will get some more done of E and D very soon

Ahhh that made me giggle, he gets a little confussed with my HHO friends, also he knows so many people from working with horses all his life that we often bump into people that he hasn't seen for years and can't introduce me as he has forgotten their names but they remember him:)

Dno2 loved it. She previously had a very difficult pony who was full of ability but didn't like to show it (was often chased down the hill at Eland, when it ran the other way after being E'ed at fence 3 but allowed to continue, with me brandishing a handbag at its back end;):D:rolleyes::eek:)so to go round with a willing partner is a real highlight for her

Lovely report :D

Thank you, he blushed when I read that out to him, but I also said who is the big lad V or DK:D

Will also tell Dno2 that you saw her thank you for the lovely compliment about the pair of them
Lovely report. 18.2 or bigger  Thought those XC fences looked small - now I know why.

The largest Micklem is a large for 16.2+ but apparently they come up big. You can hire one to try at http://www.hireamicklembridle.co.uk/hire.html which may be an idea.

Yes the fences do look small especially the menage fence when riding at home!

Thank you for the link will investigate that tomorrow

lovely report! sounds like a great weekend :D

Thank you it was a great weekend although I am still recovering from all the walking:)
