What a lovely idea!
I wasn't home at midnight, but was lucky enough to be in the bell-tower of our local church, where several of my friends are bell-ringers. As the seconds countdown to midnight was quietly murmured by one of the bystanders, there was a sadness you could almost touch. Then the Captain of Bells called those wonderful words "Treble going - she's gone", and the wonderful peal of bells rang out over our little village. Every resonant note, floating into the starry night sky seemed to carry a memory of someone lost for ever - parents, family, friends, beloved horses, dogs, cats.
I had tears running down my cheeks, and felt foolish; but when I looked furtively around, other people were very moved as well. I think for many of us, especially those from the North like myself, tonight is not New Year's Eve but Old Year's Night, when we look back to waht has gone before.
I will light a tealight now, which can safely burn down over night, in memory of so many people and animals. Thank you for a lovely idea, and a Happy New Year
