YO, YO's sharer and I went for a lovely hack this afternoon. Ruby and I were at the front leading. We were on our way back to the yard. Theres one horrible bend on the road but in the 3 years of riding down it, never had any issues as everyone does slow down. Today however a van came flying around the bend at about 35mph. Ruby and I froze and the driver slammed his brakes on which caused him to skid. I thought I was a goner! So did my YO as she screamed. Ruby jumped to the side and then calmly stood there whilst the van skid to a stop. He turned the engine off and came to see if we were ok (Ruby acted like nothing had happened) it turns out I know the man. His a family friend of YO'S. He drives that road all the time and always says hello and passes wide and slow or turns his engine off. He was so shaken up and apologised over and over again. He would never intentially try to harm a Horse but in this instance was just driving way too fast. I didn't yell at him as he looked on the verge of tears. Ruby was so sensible and didn't seem to care at all, she carried on the ride like nothing had happened. We had vans, bikes and cars overtake and approach and she was fine. Was so scary though. I honestly believed me and Ruby were gonna get hit, thank gof for my brave sensible Horse getting us out the way and waiting for the van to come to a stop.

Agreed. Think he will deffiently cut his speed down on that road. He was more shaken then me and Ruby. He looked like he was going to cry. He said sorry over and over and he was so white!

I've had a similar experience-I screamed too! Scary I know, so horrible. I couldn't stop shaking! Thank goodness you were ok. These things happen unfortunately x

Me and my friend had a similar experience but with this massive contractors tractors. Most of the farmers round us are fab with the horses, but the contractors they get in are all idiots. We always know they are contractors as they have very clean blue massive tractors.
This one day only a couple of months ago, we were riding up to a bend in a country road and could hear something coming. I placed my big ID 17.1hh horse further into the road to see what was coming round the corner, my friend was in front but tucked in the grass verge.

This massive tractor came round the corner, saw me and braked. The tractor made a right racket and skidded to stop but the trailer sort of jack knifed to the side. I froze, my horse froze and we watched this tractor pass my friend and head to us. He stopped just in front of my horses nose. I was white and shaking, my friend launched at the very young driver with a load of verbal abuse re driving too fast tc. I was too shook up to say anything. I then had to pass the tractor and trailer, shaking and my horse has never been the same with trailers since. He lets tractors go past but we have to get them to stop if they have a trailer hitched on...think he thought it wasnt going to stop either!!!

Its very frightening so I understand completly!!

Ohh that sounds horrible :(. I was too shocked to say anything at the time. But partly because it was this one particular man that did it. She was fine with the traffic after so luckily it doesn't seem that Ruby will be affected in the future.

I had a very similar experience with tractor and trailer... was out hacking with a friend and just turned a sharp corner on a very very narrow country road, I was in front and next thing I knew there was a massive tractor and trailer speeding towards us trying to stop! I nearly had a heart attack as the horse I was on reared up and the horse behind spun and bolted up the road a couple of paces... luckily the tractor managed to stop and it turns out the horses had spooked at a bit of cardboard in the road  near where the tractor was and I was the only one panicking about being hit by the very big tractor skidding towards us! I had to let my friend lead my horse past as I was too shocked, shaking and wide eyed to push her on past it! won`t be forgetting that incident in a hurry!
