Poor little Dumally the 4yo has heard about all the reports from the clever younsgters on here - especially from his name-a-like Kirstyhen's Mally - and has been begging me for some time to write one for him. Last night I obliged, but it crashed my computer and I lost the report, along with the will top live. However he's badgered me again this morning so here I am!

I entered him in a walk/trot test for his competition debut last weekend while he was still out on his hols sunbathing in the field. He got a pretty rapid 30 minute makeover, 4 days over work then bounded up the ramp into a friend's lorry along with her horse whilst I went off to pick up Jerry. His companion horse was on an hour before Dumally so when I arrived I found him stood on his own on the lorry fast asleep as he'd finished his haynet and couldn't think of anything to do other than sleep! :rolleyes:. He was equally donkey-ish (sorry, docile ;)) under saddle and whilst no-one could mistakenly call what we did in the ring 'dressage' I had no complaints about his behaviour :D

This week has been all about jumping. I hadn't jumped him when I broke him in as I didn't think he was strong enough so this week he's had one jumping session on the lunge and two under saddle. I threw all the scary fillers at him (not literally! :p) on the 'start 'em young' school of jump training and he just trotted up and lobbed over all of them, including the paddling pool we use as a water tray :eek:.

That accomplished yesterday he went to a hunter trial :eek::eek:. In mitigation I'd like to mention that I did have a lead horse arranged but they jibbed at the last moment and we really did just trot most of it.

We went around again after a wee ice-cream break and he was much less wobbly and even jumped some of the middle sized fences :D, which he jumped much better as they weren't quite so insultingly small.

And for the Fugly fans he's looking even more donkeyish in his temporary new home. I've moved him to a place with a fold yard to continue his convalescence. When he looks over his gate he can see for about 15miles so he's not bored. Except that he's mostly too busy eating to look at the view! :rolleyes:

Wow what a super youngster with such an honest attitude I'm very jealous; you have obviously done a great job breaking/training him :)
 
ah, he looks very nice and very calm for his first outings :)

I think the pony may have stolen his thunder though- how cute?!

Quiet baby horses are highly under-rated in my opinion, I can't be arsed with silly drama queens!

What a smashing boy, how cool to just stand politely and watch while a tiny person on a tiny pony rudely overtakes and messes about for ages right under your nose - amazing! Think you might have a superhorse in the making there GB and well done :D
 
That is one clever youngster! You couldn't really imagine a more upsetting situation than the pony fence, but he took it all in his stride. Well done indeed!
 
What a little angel! He didn't look phased by any of it though it must have been a bit :o :o back in the lorry park having to admit he was over taken by somthing 13hh and round!

I'm going to have to show Harry all these reports of angelic youngsters as he is currently well and truely in the naughty books!

Please excuse me for being dense but what happened to Fugly? Why is he convalesing??
 
Awww what a fab attitude he has! I am loving all of our angelic youngsters on here - aren't we a lucky bunch :D
 
You have some very smart horses this year - bet you are quite excited about it all. I love babies especially when they are so willing. I think its because everything they do is a positive and you stop worrying about everything they cannot do!
 
Aw bless him he is just...where do i sign up to send my yearling to you at that age?!?! My OH always says the nicest baby horses are the boring ones!! he is a credit to you
 
Haven't read replies. Glad to see Fugly has enough hay so that you only have to go and see him once a week ;). That 4yo is very cool, however looks too small for you so should probably come and live with me. I see a new take on the Monty Roberts angle of "break em in in 20 mins" here, you'll make a fortune...
 
I did snigger out loud at the overtaking (undertaking?) pony! Bless what a superstar he was standing there. Doubt by almost 18yo would be that patient! Which venue was the HT at?

Missed whats happened to Fugly, why the convalescence?
 
Love the over-taking-but-not-gonna-jump pony. What a good boy yours is for standing so patiently before going over in what was his eyes a raised trotting pole.
 
Goodness gracious me. What a lot of lovely replies! :D I guess everyone just loves a cute pony (and a slightly less cute and definitely larger Dumally! ;)). I'm going to have to break with tradition and apologise here as work do not allow me enough time to eat lunch AND reply to everyone individually and I need to eat!

Generic but very grateful replies :o:
1) Yes the tiny pony was v cute! And v tiny. Dumally only just scrapes 16hh and I think the pony must have been about 12hh. Determind jockey eh?
2) Yes Dumally is too small for me. Sadly :(. However I plan to sell him mid summer so he'll just have to carry me until then. Or work out how to use a phone and ring the RSPCA ;)
3) I like the quiet ones too! :cool: He's very much like his mother who was the most fabulous hunter on earth but never, ever made a fuss about anything. I think he's the most sensible pony I've broken in yet, but then I say that every time! I had someone hold his head the first time I got on but have done him completely alone other than that.
4) Plans? A couple of BYEH 4yos are vaguely pencilled in but I don't know whether he'll be ready or not. 90cm seems a long way away at the moment, even if he did jump some of the bigger XC fences! :eek: I ride him 3-4 times a week and will keep popping him to the odd HT/baby SJing every 3 weeks or so and see where we get to. Then I'll sell him to the highest bidder, make my fortune and retire! :D :p
5) The XC course is Appleton-le-Moors
6) Fugly had a mystery lameness which we think is a stress fracture. He's had 6 wks box rest, will have 6 weeks in his fold yard and if I can prise him away from his haynets he'll then go out for 6 weeks. I should get him back out this season some time.
7) Tiger_Eye - you are joking right? Those haynets will only last him until lunchtime! :eek::eek:

I would have been quite miffed with the little rider overtaking me, so close to a jump, but then I suppose they weren't to know that you were on a young horse. He was a superstar to just stand and watch then just pop over it after the pony refused it.

I didn't even hear the kid coming! I did shout to let me know next time they were going to whizz past please! :eek: To be fair they were too young really to know about overtaking. I'd passed it earlier on the course when it had a stop at the water.

He is a superstar isn't he? I just hope that's his temperament rather than soon-to-wear-off naivety! :rolleyes:
