Murphy cut his pad on the beach yesterday. He can walk on it okay and it seems clean but is there anything I can put on it other than salt water to help prevent infection?
I use either salt water or diluted hibiscrub. If the cut is quite deep I bandage the entire foot and check and change it daily, until a decent amount of healing has taken place - normally a few days. Bandaging helps keep dirt out and also prevents the wound re-opening. When the cut is really deep, some vets like to stitch, but I have never found this to be successful.
I dont bandage ours as dogs would have a fit and end up chewing their own paws off.
Can you get hold of some steri strips? They are a life saver for deep split pads in the season, little bit of savlon and closed with a coupe of strips and should be fine.
Many thanks for all the advice. We felt a bit panicked as Murphy is our first dog and it was his first injury. We did bandage after cleaning it and putting savlon on and surprisingly he didn't try to chew it off. Today it is looking much better and he is no longer limping.
