A Devastating Day

Thank you everyone, I'm sat here in tears and have poured a glass of wine. The fire service were brilliant, we were truly lucky (not the right word) to have Jim Green attend , he is the top large animal rescuer in the country I believe, he trains the fire brigade throughout the country. Hearing the awful words from one fireman to another "this is now not a rescue but a retrieval", she was still alive then. I'm so very sorry Angie.

Ugh . . . what awful words to have to hear . . . but, please, please don't beat yourself up - you did everything you could, the sweet girl died knowing people were trying to help her and with her beloved owner by her side . . . I know it likely won't make you feel much better right now, but please try and take comfort from the fact that her death was NOT your fault.

Please be kind to yourself.

Just wanted to add my condolences, what a tragic thing to happen :(
I know how heartbroken you all must be, my thoughts are with you all and RIP young girl xXx

Oh you poor lady, how awful for you. Have you people with you, I think you need a fuss and looking after. Don't sit on your own with it playing on your mind. It was just a horrible, horrible accident.

Oh I am so, so sorry OP. What a terrible thing to have happened. You did amazingly well to find the filly and to bring her some comfort at the end. I am sure you did everything foreseeable to keep her safe, and you were just terribly unlucky to be there when she had her misadventure. Bless you. Hope you can heal very soon x x x

Such a sad story, for everyone involved. It can't have been much fun for the emergency services either, knowing that their best efforts were ultimately in vain. Don't blame yourself though OP, it was just horses and accidents - sadly they belong together. I, along with another DIYer looked after a third person's horse while she went down to HOYS one year. Our three neds were out together. I did the evening shift, all was well with them. When I came up the next day I was told that the one we had been caring for had gone down with colic that night and had been found collapsed on the yard by the YO a couple of hours previously. They got her into the wagon and off to hospital but sadly she died as they were prepping her for surgery. She was 7 years old. I can't tell you how bad I felt because I was the last person to check on her and she was fine. None of the others were ill and we walked and walked the field looking for something she could have eaten. But it was just colic and the timing was bad. No-one could have done any more for her. That was nearly 20 years ago and I still feel sad.
