On her thread Faracat posted this picture:

I have edited the photo to show what I think the foot should look like and was wondering if I'm right?

I think that:
The blue line is where the hoof is at the time was picture was taken.
The green line is where it should be.
The white line is where the heel should be.

But look at the angle at the top of the hoof - it is infact growing through new hoof at the green angle. Haven't seen other thread, but guess this is a newly barefoot hoof?

(Faracat is a bloke) :)

Funniest thing ever! :D

Here I am (in drag of course :p ) riding the mare in the hoof photo.

No, she's been out of shoes for about a year and a half, however the hoof was awful to start with (original thread is in the picture gallery called chestnut mare's hooves, the long journey to soundness I think).

BBH - I agree with your lines and this is where I hope that her hoof will grew out to. She has changed hoof shape several times, slowly getting closer and closer to what you have drawn. My new Farrier has said (about the time that that photo was taken) that her hoof would be smaller than it is now and that he could see positive changes to her heels. :)

The lines indicate what a textbook hoof would be.

The horse herself will indicate what she actually wants.

As long as we respect that fine point - fine.

Problems occur when envision such lines and then trim according to them while ignoring what the horse wants :).

I'll be continuing down the road of letting her grow her own hoof without lots of filing. My friend's EP scared the life out of me (filed right through the black hoof wall to the inner white layer) and after a minor wobble (and some advice), I decided that - 1. I have a sound horse as things are now - 2. her hooves are improving and - 3, I think that all that filing would really weaken the hoof capsule... so I'm sticking with new Farrier. ;)
