So I took everyones advise re: the two main issues...title & soundness of horse. Looked like we were getting somewhere with the ownership issue so I contacted the vets who dealt with her previous lameness. Due to the special circumstances they agreed to disclose the diagnosis (but would not go into too many details) and it turns out she damaged her suspensory ligament. I have not been given the full details so do not know the extent of the damage but the general feeling was:

1. the turnout would have done her good
2. she will probably be suitable for hacking & non-competitive small jumping/flatwork but its unlikely she would cope with any competitive work
3. there is no point in the vet seeing her now – she will need at least 4 weeks of regular work then the vet will come visit and pass his judgment

So I have decided I am not going to invest any £££ in her however have agreed to continue helping the yard owner sort the issue out will help bring her back into work so the vet can visit in a month and check her soundness.

Suspensories don't necessarily mean horses are restricted to flatwork/hacking. I know of racehorses who have gone back to racing (successfully) after suspensory injuries. When she does get vetted, get the vet to scan the suspensory and other tendons.

My mare did her high suspensory ligament. She doesnt like jumping now on grass-tho i partly think this is due the fact she did it whilst jumping and is mindful of that. She is fine on a surface.
I chose not to compete her now as she is Grade B and i dont have the desire to wizz round little courses and dnt expected her to do 1.25m anymore.
However we do compete at dressage and the occasional combined training. I dont have any problems with her leg anymore.

Safina in all honesty, If it was me, I would leave this horse. There are so many horses out there that dont have any problems, and YES I think you could find a fantastic freebie/cheap horse if you wait and spread the word around that you are looking.

Thanks for all your thought - as mentioned above I am not going to invest in her as the risks assosiated are too great and I know I am after a sound comp horse.

The YO is going to incur any costs assosiated with selling her (for a nominal amount no doubt) and I am just the willing jockey to help bring her back into work so the vet can assess her.

Thanks again, roll on Christmas when the proper horse hunt can begin (and please stop me looking on Horses for Sale every 5 minutes!).

Hi just wanted to add that i have a mare who tore her suspensory ligament quite badly has been off for 9months so far just walking and on box rest, should be coming back into full work in a months time so know a bit about this type of injury. If this mare is off for 16 months then should be ok and provided suspensory is healed should be fit for whatever you want to do with her maybe not stand up to eventing tho.
When she is that cheap could be worth the risk obviously with a scan to make sure it healed in the right way.

Thanks for your thoughts Betty - she has been out the whole time so there is no guarantee she has had the break she needs to heal properly. I saw her last week and she was sound messing about in the field but until she is scanned there is no way of telling what is going on....and I've decided that I am not going to put any £££ into her as ultimately I know she won't be the competition horse I want sadly.
