A DOG IS FOR LIFE, NOT JUST TO MATCH THE SOFA!

Being the local practice to the council stray kennels we are seeing loads of dumped dogs at the moment. We are probably seeing 4-5 each day - these are only the sick ones so there are more than that coming in I expect.

I would say at least 75% or maybe over that are staffies. This doesn't seem to deter people from breeding more. This week we had a woman on the phone - her bitch was caught 9 weeks ago (coincidentally by another staffie - convenient?) and now has gone into labour. It sounded like it was in the first stages and everything was going fine - but she obviously had no idea about the whole process and hadn't bothered to find out. She rang later to say things hadn't progressed and when we suggested that the bitch came in to be checked over she couldn't even afford the consult fee! So it was extremely lucky that it didn't need a caesarian then! I sadly suspect those pups may be destined for the council kennels in the not too distant future.

I feel sorry for the staffies as they never shift from the rescues. I've seen the same group of youths with 3 different staffy pups in the space of a year but never with the adult so I know where they've ended up

I know someone who gave a home to a Borzoi from Borzoi Rescue . . . . beautiful dog . . . . it had been given to the rescue by some people who had originally bought him because they thought he would be an elegant addition to the houseold and would look smart to accompany them to dinner parties . . . . then they realised that the dog would need looking after and shed hairs in their immaculate home . . . . so the poor thing went to rescue but, thankfully, ended up in a super home.

I've obviously got things in reverse as I ended up matching my sofa to my dogs!
I used to have a lovely terracotta suite but it got so covered in dog hair, muddy footprints and general dog grot that I ended up replacing it with a more practical brown suite.

Hehe, I did say when I recarpeted my house that I was going to get a jam jar, fill it with pondwater, mud, grass and fox poo, throw in a decomposing rabbit, give it a good shake and ask the carpetshop to match the colour!

Hmmm I have made a tactical error here - one black greyhound, one white one

Any suggestions what colour the furniture and carpets should be? I dont like zebra stripe

Memo to self: when choosing next rescue dog, get one the same colour as existing dog

Don't bother matching dogs or furniture just use throws! I buy the 12' x 12' cotton dust sheets from DIY stores and put them in the washing machine with a pot of dye and bingo, you have a long lasting cheap throw of whatever colour you fancy, then I jazz it up with multi coloured cushions to disguise the fact that I'm a cheapskate

Well I thought that was a good idea too and put some throws over the bench seat in the lorry for the dogs to sit on. Unfortunately when I got back to the lorry after my riding lesson yesterday I found all the padded seats on the floor in the middle of the living, with the throw randomly on top with lots of ginger, brown and white hair and muddy footprints all over the lot and 2 very happy dogs perched on the top.
Hum

I hope they don't think this is a good idea and will do it every time we go anywhere!

I think I may have found a staffie!

Bitch pup, somewhere between 3 and 6 months. Almost completely bald due to mites/fleas. Bit backward in development.

Needs to be homed with another dog. Currently in foster care with other dogs. Can't be homed until new year as still undergoing treatment. (suits us as we are skiing after xmas)

I am first to enquire about her and will chat to her foster carer on Sat or Sun, then hopefully visit her and then poss have a home check/vets reference.
