LOL - we were just talking about this the other night and I was trying to justify to my new OH why my dogs are so damned spoilt ;) :o

When I first had dogs, over twenty years ago, as an adult (ie not parents) my dogs were dogs, they stayed downstairs on the floor, no way were they allowed on any furniture or God forbid upstairs!

As time passed and new dogs came, eventually the sleeping on the sofa was allowed but never, ever upstairs.

More time has passed and my latest recruit Rosie sleeps on the settee, goes upstairs if I am and even (shock horror) sleeps on my bed :eek: So much for rufty tufty working dogs eh? ;)

But its funny that from the three dogs I have now, the oldest never even attempts to get on the settee, the second oldest does and very occassionally comes upstairs when he is very excited and needs to tell me something whereas the third youngest appears to have the run of the house :o

Obviously I am slacking in my old age :o
 
Thanks, whisp&willow - thought it was only me! They're close-clipped, no fancy hair cuts, but they're POODLES nevertheless! However, you wouldn't believe the number of people who stop us on a walk to admire them!!!! Then they look at my Large Munsterlander and ask "And what sort of cross is he?"!!! :mad: Grrrrr!!!
 
I like a dog being a dog, no poodles for me!! :eek:
But a Large Munsterlander sounds PERFECT for snuggles on the sofa!

Sandra ALWAYS sleeps on the sofa hehe. She comes upstairs occasionally, and when I'm feeling really down she sleeps on my bed. :rolleyes:

Well said, horseless jorge! My Munsterlander is very cuddly and can curl himself into a small cat-like ball on the sofa, thus taking up less room than my Springers! Actually, he's a bit of a pain on the bed as he keeps waking up and walking all over you which, one night, caused OH to go downstairs at about 3am and sleep on the sofa!!!!:D
 
Very cute, jsr! I actually met a cockerpoo on a dog walk yesterday evening and it really was adorable (mind you, I LOVE working cockers!). Wonder whether they shed hair like cockers or just need to be clipped and don't shed......? Oops - getting off the subject now of dogs on sofas/beds etc!!!:eek:

We got given a two year old choc lab a few years ago, and I changed the sofas to match her! She was not allowed on the sofas, and happily lay on the rug in front of the fire.

Then, last winter, we adopted a yellow lab from a rescue, who had obviously been allowed on sofas in one of his previous three homes, and worked on a "ignore you, leap on and curl up like a cute thing" policy. He was so funny that we started letting them both on the sofas this summer - something that I will live to regret in winter when they're always wet, but am praying that the lure of the rug in front of the fire will keep them off.

We are just knocking through to the cottage next door, so will have a second living room, which is intended to be a cleaner living room. Dogs will not be allowed in there when wet, or on the sofas. I love my dogs, and they come in the house, but I look forward to a room where non-animal friends can come. Some of our good friends are allergic, and really suffered when they stayed with us for a weekend!

The dogs are not allowed on beds, but we have a Sunday lie in - one of us gets up and feeds the animals and lets the dogs out, then comes back to bed. The dogs are allowed on the bed later on when we get up, if they are dry. They actually seem to know what day it is, and queue up to come on. The bedding is changed on a Sunday too (usually) so its not hairy. Generally speaking I can't stand dogs on beds. It would be a nightmare anyway for us, as choc lab insists on lying right on top of me, full length, to stop yellow lab getting cuddled - so would be too much all night as she's six stone! Again, when the knock through is completed, and we have a lovely new bedroom, the dogs not on beds rule may come back!

I'm not overly houseproud - my stables are cleaner than the house, but I don't want to live in a smelly bombsite either!
 
My dogs are newly NOT allowed on the sofas.. They were, but now, in a bid to regain some control and general respect - They are not. Except neither of them seem to like this new rule and keep clambering up onto the sofas when we go out.

I put chairs upside down on all the sofas and arm chairs before I went to work today, and came back at lunch to find that Bryony had pushed one off and curled up in its place, and Tyson had eaten a leg off another.
 
Ah lovely pics of sofa surfers on here :) Dogs are love on four legs..of my 3, my small and medium older pair are at their contented happiest when snuggling up on the sofa, and under my quilt with me all night (even on the hot nights they are under the quilt, they are wimps). Young and huge Ridgeback cross only allowed on sofa for cuddles, which he loves,when older 2 go up to (my)bed..wouldn't be fair on them otherwise. Dominance theory has long been discredited, you don't have to be some kind of Sergeant Major to have well behaved dogs! I have always had Guarding types of dogs and pet types...I think showing them affection and letting them be a full member of the family actually makes them softer, if anything!

I'd never dream of having visitors who did not embrace animals in general!

But then...I think children should be mostly kept outside (JOKE)

PS A lot keep horses inside a lot, but dogs outside?! No logic there!
 
Big stinky dogs arent allowed in the house full stop (lab, dirty spaniels, OHs exes ;))

Little stinkiy dogs have to stay outside too.

Little dogs that smell of Aussie luscious long shampoo (mmmm) can do what they like, and often the dog smells an awful lot nicer than OH!!!
 
Leah3horses, here are some more sofa surfers (when they were puppies - they're three years old now!). All I can say is........sofas were made for dogs!

The sofa in question is, as of this afternoon, sitting on my lawn awaiting removal to the tip! New sofa now in situ! Sadly, I think its premature demise may be due to dogs and kitties!!!:D
 
I never had a dog on any furniture until my current girl got pancreatitis and nearly died ... Now she comes into the bedroom at night and stays at the foot of the bed until morning .
 
Our JRT is allowed anywhere in the house and on anythng!! Always has been!! The lab is a bit big for the settee so she is on the floor, most of the time!!

LOL it put things into perspective!
Actually, I started having her in the room because she was in so much pain we needed her with us - it comforted her and also comforted us that we would know at once if she deteriorated in the night so we could rush to the vet again, etc ... Thinking back she started improving as soon as she was allowed on the bed :rolleyes: ... Magic cure to a potentially terminal illness.
 
Right, today's been a big, busy day for me! Many of you will know I married Tony on the 9th July (second time around for both of us!) and today he moved house (completing the sale tomorrow but moving today). It's now almost 7.35pm.....first removal van arrived 11am......still waiting for the fourth.....I've chucked out my what was my expensive (£3,400) three piece suite circa 2002 - virtually ruined by kitties and dogs - to be replaced with new OH's really lovely 2-seater and 3-seater leather suite. Removal men removed my suite and, horror of horrors........THE DOG HAIR!!!!!! I was SO embarrassed when they removed my old suite....they lifted the cushions and OMG......so much dog hair underneath! Perhaps I should have poodles instead of "real" working dogs!!!!:o

:D You'll like the new leather suite - very easy to sponge down if necessary ;)
 
Don't be ridiculous - jack russells are excellent hot water bottles!! (draw the line at having our greyhound in the bed though - except when OH away) :D

I did the same with our old dog. She never used to sleep on our bed (OH didn't approve :rolleyes: and I'm a very light sleeper), but for her last week, when she was very ill, I had her in the bed with me (OH was unceremoniously moved out :D). I found it comforting to have her there and I hope she did too. She was very restless and would pace around for hours otherwise. I had to lift her onto the bed and then just stroked her until she fell asleep. I miss her. :(
