Oh yes... It's Delightful Daemon's Dire Dressage Debut Day :D And in for a penny, in for a pound, Fabulous Fergus's Formidible Flying er... Flamingo?

I'm sorry, I've been out in the sun all day. I think it's getting to me a bit! In English, Daemon did his first dressage today, and I figured Fergus may as well come along and give me an "easy" ride for the day too. Because it's my local, and so very local, I decided to bring them separately and drop D home before F's test - the joys of being 5 minutes from a big competition centre!

So after some agonising, Dae was up in prelim 4 - I did consider playing it safe and doing an intro, but I've never been one to sit on the fence and the intro tests are ghastly. I warned the judge on entry that they may feel the need to curl up in the corner of their hut crying and rocking during the test, and apologised for any loss of sanity that may result from that. But, despite some "interesting" moments in the warm up, we had the bare minimum of sickening violence during the test itself. No bucking. No death by highland. Score!

In fact, the bits that were nice were very nice. The bits that weren't... Well, we exited the arena stage right after the second CL and had to circumnavigate the boards before re-entry, and left canter took half an arena to pick up and only lasted for a 20m circle! Right canter was a little late - he did offer me a cracking medium trot in lieu of missing canter to be fair - but largely present and correct after that point.

('scuse me looking like a right tool here - I think I was aiming for effective at this point!)

Ended with around 59% which I though was very fair and reasonable under the circumstances ;)

Ditched Daemon at home, and picked up Mr Fergus for the elementary. Fergus warmed up super - really powerful and full of it - and I was playing with bringing him into a short frame then lengthening again and bringing him back and putting him forwards in trot and canter. He gave me some mega medium canter and felt fabulous. I probably made the mistake of pushing a bit too hard, too long in the warm up, and he did drop me a little in the test itself.

He sat a little on my leg in the collected trot and dropped me a little in the first canter circle. Buoyed up from Daemon taming, I really got after him, and I think made my point - he offered me cracking medium trot (by his standards!) and lovely canter work, so I think it was instructive for both of us. The advantage of today being "only unaffiliated" meant I was confident to risk pushing him and seeing where it left us, which is pretty useful for the next time we go BDing.

We ended up with a really encouraging score of 69.6% - and we've competed under this judge before so have a direct comparison, suggesting it is a real improvement and not just a "nice judge" :D

So very happy JFTD today, even if we didn't win on either score, on this occasion I'm pretty darn happy with the way things are going. Here's a gratuitous pic of Fergus looking pretty and sparkly just because :D

love them! Well done you.
I have heard it said you get what you want so therefore I should not be shocked my welsh cob named Muffin is at bit porky ........
and well Deamon exiting stage right at dressage ........... :D

Dae is ace, I am head over heels for him! And that is a cracking score for a baby who is still learning how to play the poncing game :) And you know how much I like Fergs, and he looks so happy and well.

I don't always say so but I do love your reports - it looks like Dae is Fergus' little protegee! They are a lovely pair and that is a great score for D's first time out - look forward to reading about more of his adventures in the future! And that is a gorgeous pic of F at the end, those crystal plaiting band covers definitely suit him!

HAHA! Well, Daemon's real name is "Morrich Darach", he earned the name Daemon for jumping out of my field routinely ever since he was a yearling! He's definitely named for who he is, not named to make him who he is :D

mmm you've put me in mind for a muffin now :D

Thanks! He's special, isn't he - properly fun, whizzy pony :D I think the respectable-ish nature of his score reflect how nice some bits were in contrast to the monster moments - I certainly couldn't complain of a sheet full of 6s with him - we had the full range of 3s to 7s :D And Fergus had his first 8s at elementary #proudowner :) He likes his job now, he's much better suited, mentally to it than jumping.

Thanks! Oh god no - I think Fergus is Dae's protege in evilness - he teaches him to escape from my field and everything! Daemon won't be a dressage horse really - he's too much a fan of fun and games to be stuck in a dressage ring forever. I'm hoping he'll do some local eventing and sj long term :)

Thanks - I adore that pic :D

Great report, lovely ponies, great pics! You must be VERY proud of Fergus.

Thanks! I am - sometimes I need to step back, give myself a kick and just marvel about how amazing he is :D

Sounds like a great day! I have visions of Saf and I hopping over the boards a la D hence me not doing a long arena test yet! I LOVE that 4th from the bottom pic of F - beautiful!

Haha! I think I'd rather leave the arena occasionally than deal with a small one! Thanks, I think I need a print of that one on my wall ;)

Saw this on facebook, well done, they both look fab!

Love the exiting arena pic, haha, definitely needs a comedy caption!

Fergs looks ace, especially in that bling :D

Thanks! Always open to comedy captions ;) Hehe, we do like a bit of bling - you should see his new bridle numbers :eek3: :D

The foals saw your thread today, Phil, and Dae's full sister (right) has been telling her half brother (left) that she's going to be every bit as good as Darrach when she grows up! I have a feeling she is going to be a bit of a handful as she is showing attitude already!

The great thing about breeding is enjoying the easy part and then sitting back and seeing someone with the skills put in all the hard work to make it happen!

Will express again what a lovely report and how versatile our lovely breed is. Have been on the receiving end of a lot of Highland pony humour so know the feeling my baby did a full circle of the very large arena at gallop in her first HOYS qualifier earlier this year bowled into the in hand section at about 35 mph and scattered everyone. Fortunately everyone including her jockey were in fits of laughter. She redeemed herself in the workers having just a pole down and a rider error run out in the HOYS class silly mare was not looking where she was going
Those foals are beautiful and look like they will be a bundle of fun.

Thank you :) Nothing like highland attitude, is there?! I don't do in hand - I did one or two when F was much younger and it was just an exercise in ski-jorring along behind him desperately clinging on and dodging his back legs! In fact, I don't show at all, now but that's another story! Sounds like a very positive workers experience though :)

She's going to be such a cracker! Shame she's a girl :p I do like the "half and half" though - Fergus's trainability and Dae's spirit, perhaps? :D
