A&E or not?

Glad you went I dislocated my little finger some years ago put it back strapped it couple of months later did it again fixed it myself and then a third time 3/4 months later which was more difficult to reduce. Went to A&E and had the riot act read as I had not attended the first time and had the physio. I now have a deformed arthritic finger that I cannot straighten so when I badly dislocated the ring finger next to it 18 months ago I put it back strapped it and went to minor injuries then directly to hand clinic 4 days later. Intensive physio, specialised support braces, lots and lots of exercises I have a functioning finger with a bigger joint than it was but I have good grip.

Good job you went, I mashed the tip of my finger in a lawn mower and waited two day before going to a &e as it was the easter bank holiday Sunday I did it and I could not face the hospital wait, I also felt so ill cos of the pain that I didn't go!
I only went cos it was still bleeding, I had surgery the same day!
They did a fantastic job in spite of me and it rarely gives me trouble now.

Having had a similar incident back in June (leading mare into school with lunge line looped, mare spooked and pulled the line which crushed my little finger) I'd say go to A&E, I went to out of hours but still had to go back to A&E for a x-ray. I fractured the middle bone, it still aches and I can't bend it as well as the other.

Just seen you've been, hope it heals well for you and doesn't hurt too much x

Glad you went! I've just had the metal splint taken off my right ring finger after getting it clonked by the metal end of a leadrope. Doesn't look likely that I'll ever be able to fully straighten it again, and it lurches to the left at the top knuckle. I'm getting close to being able to bend it past 45 degrees, though. (The nurse practitioner who splinted it was horsey, and said she was deliberately taping my ring and pinkie fingers together to make it less tempting to get back on board before I should!)

I'd ice it and take some anti inflammatories and reassess it in the morning. I'm about to start a 12.5 hr night shift in A&E - last night we had a 7 hr wait to see a Dr...............

I do appreciate that A&E departments are busy, and you do get timewasters, but all the talk last winter about them being overstretched with long waiting times was the reason I didn't go when I fell off in January.

Turned out I had broken a rib (which I knew) and two vertebrae (which I didn't know). I'm lucky I'm still walking.

Very glad the OP went, and is getting appropriate treatment!

Urgh just back from the hospital encased in plaster from elbow to fingertips. Not impressed - can’t drive, have 2 job interviews next week and I can’t do anything horsie at all. That’ll teach me!

How frustrating for you!!! I feel for you.

I fully sympathise. I broke my ring finger on my left hand when a pony I was leading pulled away as they didn't like the electric fence. Ended up in A&E when it became obvious it wasn't something I could shrug off and was left my with arm in plaster and couldn't drive or ride. It was this time of year luckily so I was able to just turn my two hairy native ponies out into a big field with daily checks until I was fit again.

I do hope it turns out alright for you: the only finger I ever had properly splinted in hospital (GA and everything) is the only one that isn't straight now (the other DYI breaks are more or less OK).

I did the same thing two years ago, an accident involving my boxrested mare and an overconfident vet...pretty sure I broke the middle finger on my right hand but never got it checked out. To this day it's still noticablely swollen compared to the same finger on the other hand, and hurts when the weather turns cold.

Glad you got seen OP!
