a fascinating pic that has come up on FB.

Ooh that's horrible. Our dog once got a bran flake (don't ask) stuck in the roof of his mouth like this, I had to put my fingers right in and hoik it out (dog and I understand each other very well or I would not have tried). But the fuss he made was understandably immense - clawing frantically at his mouth, rubbing his face on the floor etc. It's incredible that a horse could've been in that state for so long and not shown any signs - or clearly not signs that were picked up on, anyway.

Just awful.

Back in 76 our shetland stallion started coughing, random on and off, no other symptoms. Couldn't see anything in his mouth.
Vet was out 3 days later for annual vaccs, found a wedge of willow in exactly the same place as in the photo. (For those who followed the tv Vet of the time, it was Tony Wilson-Jones)
Mother never let the ponies tidy up branches ever again. That sort of thing really sticks with you.

Its the centre part of a bit isn't it? Boy oh boy that must be so painful for the poor horse. 🙁
no that was suggested but per the vet it was part of a stick. It rang a bell with me as I thought I had similar, horse had been eating branches and next day couldn't eat. Got vet out with a gag to see if there was a bridged stick. Mine just had an infection but this is the first pic I have seen of the real thing.

I shall go back again and have another look. ☺️

My gelding did this a couple of years ago … he was dribbly and looking at us a bit like “I need help please” - but not overly concerned (he’s a real pansy in general). He did look quite pleased to have it out and get back to chewing normally when the vet got it out a few hours later 😂

...add to list of things to worry about.
I considered this but actually - it's not fatal and if you know your horse you'd probably pick up that there's an issue very quickly. And it's easily sorted*. So I've decided not to list it.
*although you can guarantee it'll be a Sunday morning £200 call out fee kind of jobby
