Mare and foal picture taken by husband yesterday at about 3pm whilst he was out walking the dogs.

http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/picture.php?albumid=2464&pictureid=17965

The mare was tethered to a fence post, with no water & my husband untangled the rope which had become caught up. My husband emailed the park owners, the RSPCA and the World Horse Welfare Organisation with pictures.

The park owners have had a lot of problems with the local travellers fly grazing their horses on their property, which is open to the public. But they contacted the police and the RSPCA and surprise, surprise the RSPCA came up trumps. The mare and foal were safely removed at around 6:45pm this evening :)

I'm so pleased for both mare & foal because they had recently been kept on a piece of wasteland next to the railway line that had more ragwort than grass, in fact the foal was born in that field.

This picture shows how bad the mares condition was :(

My OH said she kept whickering at him so he went to investigate and her lead rope was wrapped around the fence post in the picture so she only had about a foot of slack rope & couldn't move much. So he untangled the rope came home and email RSPCA. Who were brilliant :) :) will defo be making a donation. Yes my OH did very well indeed :) :)

To be honest, I have seen much worse, and the horses feet don't look that long either. Somehow I doubt if they will be able to find the owner so no prosecution either. But at least the horse has a chance of a better life.

Ladyt25 - not sure about the camera crew I wasn't there when they were collected!! Must admit i was surprised at the speed the RSPCA got their act together too.

I'll have to check the local rag on Thursday & see if anythings mentioned :)

Really refreshing to see a positive outcome that involves horses and the rspca in the same sentence, really glad the mare and foal have a more positive future now and are in good care. Well done to your OH

Zaminda - they have other ponies that do look worse, in fact last summer we took photos of them because they looked dreadful, coats rubbed off, no manes or tails through sweetitch, all of them were ribby with foals at foot, we sent them to the RSPCA but they did nothing about it and then one day the ponies were gone & i haven't seen them around since.

They left a 14 day notice on the fence for the owner but they said it would be unlikely that the owner would come forward. Aparently they will put a further 7 day notice on the fence & if they still don't hear from the owner they can sell them on - presumably after they've got a passport for them!!

Great to hear a positive outcome, well done to all involved! Hopefully the mare and foal will have a chance of a better life with loving owners.

It doesn't matter if there is a prosecution or not in these instances. If the RSPCA felt it necessary to remove them then they needed removing. Full stop. Photos may not always portray the real situation. Also, the real situation may well not be what OP's other half saw - there may well have been other issues going on elsewhere which the RSPCA know about for instance, or underlying issues with the horse which meant it was a lot more desperate and serious than it in fact may appear on photos.

So what if you have seen worse, we all have, but it doesn't make it right! The poor horse had no food and no water!

So very glad that the horse and foal were rescued.

Good result.

Alongside someone else, I have been involved with the RSPCA and some horses recently. The RSPCA Inspector has been nothing but brilliant.

Agreed - and she had a big foal dragging her down too! And what if the foal had wandered off and the mare had panicked?? Appalling way to 'manage' a mare & foal and I'm very glad the RSPCA got of its a*se and acted promptly!

And well done to OPs husband for making it happen!

*Awaits ridiculous 'viral marketing' posts from Shilsdair and others*

Well done OH, and RSPCA! :D Very good news.

What I actually meant, was how many other horses, are in worse condition, and have been reported to no avail? Sadly, if they find the owners, they will probably get them back, and on that front I speak from experience, having seen it happen many times with horses left tethered.

Fab news and result. Well done for standing up and saving their lives.

And for the RSPCA for taking positive action.

Hope they both get good, loving homes. Very nice looking horses :)
