A Few Questions Before Buying...

I am going to buy a horse, and before I committed to buying it I thought I better be responsible and make sure I knew what I was getting myself into!

Constructive advice gratefully recieved!!!

1) What do horses eat? Can I just pick grass for him in the winter and let him pick his own in the summer? I want to keep him inside in the winter so his feet don't get mud on them.

2) The horse I am looking at is a boy and his daddy is a shetland and his mommy is a shire.... should I keep him a boy so he can make babies? They would be very cute I think, especially the way his back feet always point behind him, its a very cute trait!

3) When I saw a picture of the horse his hair and tail aren't very pretty, can I use human hair dye to give him pretty blue streaks and glitter from the art store?

4) What size saddle and bridel and what color should I buy, since he's nearly 2 years old and hasn't been ridden I want to start him practicing very soon or he might not learn very good when he's old!

5) Lastly, how does that head harness thing fit on his head, because I tried calling him to come and walk nicely with me but he just looked at me and shook his head 'no'. Should I hit him for not obeying?

ok 1. you cant pick grass for your horse as you would be there all day as horses conatntly grze. they need at least an acre +. you will need hard feed and hay and straw for winter too along with a stable rug and a couple of turn out rugs.

2. are you for real or are you taking the P***? but if you are serious.....
no you dont buy a horse to breed unless you know what you are doing and please dont take this the wrong way but it doesnt sound like you do.

3. NO in a word

4. you cant ride a horse until at least 3 years old and even then you cant just get on him/hert as he / she needs to be trained. plus it is not as easy to guess what sizes it will need you need a saddle fitter to get the correct fit saddle!
and 5 OMG NO!

it is very clear that if this is not a joke, that you are asking these questions as you really do plan on buying a horse. you really should not as it sounds like you really dont have a clue. if you bought that horse either that or you would possibly end up getting seriously hurt or worse!!!!!

have you ever ridden before? do you have the money and time to keep a horse? where would you keep it? how would you train it when it is old enough?
no offence but you dont even know what a head collar is how do you plan on looking after a horse? if this is not a joke i would seriously think about NOT getting it or any other horse until you have ALOT more experience. x

Oh, just a thought... you said he is nearly 2?
You'll need to get shoes on him asap! No point getting a youngster if you're not prepared to ride him at least 2 hours everyday! ;)

sunshine- no kidding, right, surely he should be doing 3'5" fences by now??? What a lazy git, what am I spending money feeding him for??? :D
