The Alternative Riding Club, based in Catsfield / Bexhill area! Been going for years, actually would be a good one for Sam, it's dead cheap and it's easy to get on teams etc. They do plently I think, all very local

PAH !

You don't need to go to RL in winter, and Pyecombe and Felbridge don't run over winter. You're in range of GC, Crockstead, Duckhurst and Limes...that covers pretty much every weekend of the winter

There is a list on www.britisheventing.co.uk of accredited trainers in your area

This is also good as they will know of the right courses for you to compete at, plus they will be able to help you with all three phases! and what to expect at your first event etc

Is Coombelands (Pulborough) near you? (west Sussex) they have an event there on sunday (1st oct) they run intro and pn plus the course is open for schooling

Pulborough is a fair trek away from us, but I guess i'll have to get used to travelling a bit further if we want to event (well, unless we can stick to the three I listed above lol!).

I'm off to see who the trainers in my area are now...I know a couple of people from my PC days who've done alright in eventing, but suspect they may be a bit too busy now lol!

It's quite exciting really...if a little daunting *gulp*

I've done the PN at Eridge and the Intro at Brightling this year and last. I thought Eridge was testing both times, partly because it is so hilly (so good use made of the undulations!) and partly because they've run Novice Regional Finals and JRN's both times (everything seems to be more meaty if there are Regional Finals at the event, even if not in your class)

Brightling only have Intro although they're planning to put a PN in next year I think. They have 2 waters, both of which this year you just paddled into down a slope. The course here is really nice for a first time. One of the Pony Clubs run a ODE on the Tuesday after the BE event so you get a chance to go over the Intro course at half the price!

I haven't done BE at Firle yet, but have done Unaff stuff there and think it's quite meaty.

I think a good first time course for Intro and PN would be Munstead in Godalming, although their log/sunken road/log jump seems to cause a fair bit of trouble. They put in at least one new jump per course at each event just to fool you!

Stilemans is also a really nice course apart from a scary double of rails where you land on a very steep slope. Luckily it was taken out due to frost at this Springs' event!!

I only joined BE last year - so not exactly a pro. Did one Intro (at Munstead) and then straight into PN. The size of the XC's were a bit of a shock to begin with but I'd decided I'd only do BE if I could be competitive at PN because there's plenty of 2'9" - 3ft unaff ODE's round this way but not many good 'uns over that height, and if I was going to be spending all that money I'd got to make a good go of it!!!!

I did some intros this year with my SJ.

I worked out that you need to do more than 5 events to make joining worthwhile. Although you can only do 4 events on a ticket in a year. Don't forget about the start fee usually£10, so it works out at £86 per event to enter. £51 entry + £25 ticket + £10 Start fee.

If you compete on a ticket this year you don't have to pay the initial joining fee next year which is £35 extra, you also don't pay this if you are a RC member.

The Intro I did had 6 combinations on it so you def get combinations at intro, also trakeners, ditches.

A couple of years ago I took my other horse BE and we did 2 PNs and a Novice, all in my jumping saddle so don't worry about that. Our other SJs that turned into eventers both started at Novice as we didn't have a clue how big it was.

If he is confident at doing water/ditches I wouldn't worry too much about which one you enter - although they ballot a lot a more at PN than they do Intro. The advantage at PN is that the jumping will have more of an influence if your dressage isn't in the 20s.

Thanks for all the info guys

I'm thinking we'll probably only do 1 or 2 a year, just to have a go at something different, so not sure I would bother joining just yet. I also believe they are doing tickets at £15 a go at the moment too

If we can overcome the phobia of water, then it sounds like Brightling might be the one for us...

Just had a thought last year if you bought a ticket they let you do I think 3 JAS events and 1 proper event. JAS is the simulated indoor XC.

Hey, you kidding, right?
Most events have water complexes, you betta get ur pony used to water. Its rather embarrassing to be at an event and standing there with your horse goggling at the water for ten minutes! Not that ist has happened to me! Hee Hee *Blushing*
