How much work does your horse do?
What do you feed your horse?

Having a disagreement over feeding the beast so just wondered what everyone else feeds and how much work they are doing with their horses

Basically I'm checking to see if I'm mean

Ridden 6 days a week, mainly hacking, schooling once, jumping once or a lesson.

Gets fed a few handfuls of light competition mix (enough to mix in the garlic for the flies

) once a day and thats it, no hay, shares 5-6 acres with 3 others. Doing an intro in a couple of weeks, then (if that goes well) maybe a PN in august/september - interspersed with some unaff sj - if theres any decent ones on!

Ooh, and fully clipped yesterday (gets too sweaty) out 24/7 has a LW rug on at night, but only for a couple of weeks until his coat starts to come back.

I am mean!

Difficult to answer properly as different horses have different needs. Your best bet for getting the best advice is to contact one of the feed companies, Dodson & Horrell, Baileys, Spillers etc. They all have a helpline/email address that is free to use. There will be a form to fill in that will aske you various questions about your horse, exercise, work etc & what you are feeding & they will comment & make suggestions on what they think would be right. They are the professionals & will give you impartial advice. They do not put down any manufaturers products in favor or theirs, they are very professional. I've used them several times.

I think the rule is.... Feed nothing/next to nothing except grass/hay/haylage unless your horse loses condition/becomes lethargic/shows signs of deficiencies and then increase as required.

Mine are on a tiny bit of chaff at the moment only so I can mix in their 'extras' (Farrier's Formula for everyone, garlic for the cob, magnesium supplement for the two competition horses). They live out 24/7 this time of year, get ridden 6 times a week (probably half and half hacks and schooling) and the competition horses get a lesson each a week and compete on average twice a month (dressage).

In the winter they get haylage and during the worst months one gets a weight gain mix with a no-barley mix and the other one pony nuts and the weight gain mix. The cob continues to live off fresh air through-out the year!

My 16.3hh M/W advanced horse does 1 hour schooling 3 days a week 3 1hour lessons and a 1hour hack on sundays and I feed him a full scoop of Baileys No4, a full scoop of Speedibeet, a full scoop of Dengie Chaff, 3 carrots, 1 apple & Cortaflex HA twice a day with a 241bs of haylage at night.

My 16.1 Anglo does 3 hrs of schooling and 2 hours hacking per week and has 1/2 scoop of fibre nuts, a handful of chaff, carrot, apple and Cortaflex HA once a day with 251b of haylage at night.

Would you say this is about right?
My boy is 17hh saddlebred x who is quite a good doer
He has an hours lesson once a week, schools prob 2/3 times a week and the rest is spent hacking

Will be doing some dressage in the coming weeks and he may start jumping
He is having one handful of Alfa A Lite and 3/4 of a scoop of High fibre nuts. No supplements
The grazing he is on is not all that good quality.

Ridden 5-6 days a week, mainly hacking, schooling once or twice, jumping once or a lesson and a comp normally 3 times a month.

Bane gets 24/7 grazing in summer. Summer feed is (split between two) 3/4 scoop of competition mix, couple of handfuls of alfa a oil, 3/4 scoop of pony nuts, dash of oil, garlic and joint supplement.

In the winter he comes of the mix and gets outshine and alfa-beet instead. Also in overnight in winter with ad-lib hay.
