Having established that my saddle is too small for me (see post in PG) I could do with a bit of help?

I need an idiots quide to measuring what size my current saddle is - how do i measure the length?

Is there a way to measure what length of saddle will fit me?

Does anyone happen to own an extra-wide thorowgood maxam, and if so would you be able to measure between the d-rings for me?

does anyone know if having liposuction to make me smaller might be a cheaper option than a new saddle?!

Uber thanks

Bex - you measure a saddle from the stud at the front of the saddle (either side will do) to the back of the cantle (in the middle)

I can recommend a wintec wide !! I had a maxam - it came with pony - hated it - wouldnt even give it to someone else - hard - cheap and nasty! went straight on the bonfire!

You measure the length from the stud near the pommel in a straight line to the centre point of the cantle (the back of the seat).

I would say you will need 17 - 17 1/2 inch saddle - mine is 17 1/2 if that helps?

Liposuction could actuall work out more expensive option, plus you would look a bit daft with a very small arse and normal rest of body!!!!

Thanks both - will 17inch be OK on a 14hh ponio?

browbrow, have looked at Wintec Wides and would love one but they're expensive. Think I might have to start saving....

borrow a 17" off someone and see how far back it goes. It doesn't want to be any further back than where his ribs finish, if you see what I mean?

Aren't there any WW saddles on eBay?

Maxam's are an older Thorowgood saddle, and are not very good. The new ones are very much better, and Thorowgoods are very highly recommended for cob's. They now also come with so much adjustment, that one saddle can be adjusted to fit a wide range of horses, all at very good prices.
I can also point you in the direction of what I think are the cheapest Thorowgoods available.

I agree that the pony could take a longer saddle although i am not convinced that the size of the saddle is causing all your positional problems - you could try a rear riser with the existing saddle to see if that makes it sit more level for a start.
Try this and try sliding forward a bit on your saddle, then lift and rotate your upper legs outwards and then down (do one at a time or you might fall off!) so that your upper leg is a little more vertical, you might find that you need to drop the stirrups a hole or two.
At the moment you appear to be wedged between the cantle behind you and the stirrups in front of you, possibly for security.

The best thing you can do really is to get a professional saddler out to have a look at the saddle and talk about your requirements.

They can then fit a saddle to you and the horse.

Am hoping to get something like a wintec or a thorowgood and get a saddler out to check it and make sure it fits as I'll be really worried about ponio not being comfy!

Milners are pretty good - I think the best in our area. They charge about £50 to come out and look at saddle. However, you need to remember that if he keeps losing weight he will prob change shape, so it might be worth waiting until you have got him at the weight you are happy with before spending money on saddlers/saddles, seeing as he seems pretty happy in the one he's got - it's just you who's suffering!

Buy it from a saddler who will fit it professionaly for you.

I've never tried one Bex but have you seen the Hi Lite range by shires? Their gullet self adjusts, to fit xwide. They have a variety of different models, from basic upwards, and cost about 150 pounds. I've been seriously looking at them as they seem okay for the price. I've also seen a couple of nice Gallop saddles too, which are under 100 pounds new. With those the synthetics seem to be better than the 'leather'.

There is no point measuring the d rings on the saddle, (the d rings on a 15" maxam are 9 inches BTW) as this doesnt give an accurate guide to the width. Thorowgood do a paper measuring system. If you go to their website you should be able to print it off. Personally I like the maxam, wintecs give me a sore back. But either way I think you'd do well to pop into horseware house and have a look round.

I had a Thorowgood Xwide cob saddle which I sold. I now have a wintec and it is fab! I am sure you will get one for the width you need. Ber didn't even need the wintec wide and he is quite stocky.

TBH I would get a saddle fitter to come out and see your sadle on him. I need an 18inch for my big back end but unfortunately Bert is quite short backed and cannot take more than a 17.5
