A french riders who wants to practice her english

Bonjour Erzie,

Your horses look lovely.

The word 'cob' is just as confusing for us in the UK as it describes a few different types of animal.

We have:
the Welsh Cob, or Welsh Section D, which is an actual breed. They are renowned for being fabulous all-rounders, very intelligent and a bit 'sparky';

the show cob, which is a type - they are shown hogged and with no feather. Their original job was to be a safe hunting horse for older people;

and the Gypsy cob or traditional cob which are the hairy ones with lots of feather that can often look like mini draught horses, and are often coloured.

Out of interest, is there a French word for 'cob'?
 
No, there isn't really a french name for "cob", if you mean it as a "the show cob, which is a type - they are shown hogged and with no feather. Their original job was to be a safe hunting horse for older people;"

But, in France, we also have Irish cob and welsh cob, so most people know the word by them, but they don't all know about the other sort of cob.

The point where it becomes more confusing is that the word "cob" is used for the size of tack, but it's a size between pony and horse (it fits mostly arab horses, not realy welsh cob or irish cob... or cob normand! so it's not realy logical)

And there's is the "Cob normand" that is a breed of heavy horses. Not as big as percheron, but taller than the breton or the comtois...
The "cob normand" used to be cross TB to make the "demi-sang normand" (norman half blood? is it understandable?). That horse is at the origin of the actuals "selle français" and "trotteur français".

Traditionaly, if you say only "cob" in France, people should understand "cob normand". But these days, irish cob are really fashionable, so I'm not sure that it's still that clear anymore.

Great to "meet" you and Belinda. She looks gorgeous by the way. And yes, your English really is veru good!

I have two horses - a PRE (Andalucian) gelding who is 7. I adore him, but we've had many complications and it's been a real roller - coaster ride, but still I adore him!!

I also have a TB (ex-racer) mare, who is 8 and who is just soooo sweet. Of course, we've had to do a lot of slow re-training, but she is worth all the effort.

Be lovely to hear more about you in the coming weeks.

After quite a long time without coming here, I'm back. I've been quite busy these last months.

Bellinda is going to be 23 years old next sunday. She changed stable six month ago and lives nearer to me. She enjoy her new home and she is as crazy as ever. :D

Rhino, I'm very sorry for your horse. I've known that a few years ago when Bellinda had a leg problem and vets told me that the only thing I had to do was to put her in (on? what would be correct? ) retirement. :(
She got better, but that was inexpected and I know how it feels to give up riding your horse soul mate (again, is it written correctly? )

I hope you enjoy the forum. It is a very clever way to improve your English (which really is very, very good) and to gather information.

Bellinda is so lovely, as are your other horses.

I love Brittany. We have very dear friends in Morbihan and were there last August. We actually looked at a wonderful property there. The owner is a breeder of Dartmoor ponies and was selling to move back to England. We have Shire horses and seriously considered making the move to France. However, the tax situation is very difficult for us, because we are American.

There is a forum in France dedicated to heavy horses. Your joining this forum has given me the idea to join the French one to improve my french. Thank you very much!

Her place is dreamy! Do you know if it's sold yet? I have an album of 130 odd photos she sent to me. I sit and drool over them. Where in Brittany do you live? Finisterre?
 
Monts D'arrées, is a great place for riding!
Bellinda was born there, near "La feuillée", but I've never been ther with her. I dont' think I'll have the opportunity to do it now, so it might be with Sherpa. I hope so!

Do you go to horse shows around here? My pony-club does dressage shows. This year they have to riders on side saddles.
(And I'm pretty sure there's a much better way to put this sentence, so if you got the idea, could you show me another way to say it?)

Do you mean to say "This year there will be two competitors riding side-saddle." Or "This year there will be two people riding aside." Actually, the way you worded it was perfectly acceptable.
 
I'm not sure of the differences in your two sentences... So, let me illustrate:

That's what I mean. Two riders of my club compete in dressage show (or competitions? ) like that, so nobody can miss them. If onlythepony comes to shows sometimes (at Ecuries du Kerrous, in Bodolis for exemple) she might have seen them.

That's what I meant.

The two sentences that I wrote mean the same thing. They mean the same as your words. Your English is very good!

Bienvenue a HHO (sorry, my keyboard won't let me do accents) . . . your English is excellent . . . as others have said much, much better than my schoolgirl French. Also, your mare is very beautiful and it looks like the two of you have lots of fun together.

By way of introduction, I'm Naomi . . . I have a Polish sporthorse gelding called Kali (along with a husband, two teenage daughters and two dogs . . . ) . . . have spent lots of time in France over the years both travelling on business (mostly Paris and Cannes) and "en vacances" in the Dordogne and in Brittany.

HHO is alot of fun . . . and if something doesn't make sense to you, please let us know and we'll attempt to translate/clarify.

P.S. I studied French for seven years in school (LOVED it) and then had multiple jobs requiring me to at least understand French and form written responses . . . but my French was never anywhere near as good as your English . . . very impressed

Yes, side saddle and aside sont les memes choses.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Riding astride means with a leg on either side of the horse , the way most people ride. Riding side-saddle means riding with both legs on one side as in the photo above, This requires a side-saddle saddle.
 
Hello and welcome! I've got a very close friend who is Breton so I'm used to the language barrier! She struggles to understand why we get our hair cut rather than getting our hairs cut, we laugh about it a lot! :D

You only say that because you haven't have the opportunity to hear me! :D
It's easier to write, because, when I have trouble to explain an idea, I trie to write it differently, and when I can't find a way to do it, I write something else and you can't know that I failed to express my thoughts.
But when I have to speak... I end up mumbling. :D
 
I can safely say your English is better than my French, Erzie :o I vaguely recall being quite proud of coming bottom of my class in French one year... Languages are not my forte!

My english use to really sucks... when I was at school. That's why I spent one year in your country, because I thought I really needed to learn the langage.
But if you could hear my spanish... you wouln't guess that I've been studying it for 5 years at school! :D

My brother use to live in Holland where speaking only two langages seems to be the less you can expect from anybody.
