It has been a while since I posted any pictures of Bailey, and in the past 8 months or so he has really chunked out!

I appreciate that the photos aren't brilliant; I decided to take some quick pics whilst I could remember and attempted to find the flatest and most level part of the yard for him to stand on, so he may look as though he is standing slightly "uphill" as the slop goes up left to right.

He is in the middle of being backed, and doing brilliantly [we had a month off in between due to an abcess and then more sarcoid treatment on his ear] so in total he is approximately 5 weeks in if you don't take into account the break. He is now walking off the lunge, and responding to his rider's aids and is nice and relaxed about the whole thing. He is lazy to the leg although I would prefer for him to be like this and then work to get him more responsive to my leg aids than being a "touch and they blast off" boy!! He starts hacking out next week, which hopefully won't be too eventful; he has been out round the village and down the crop fields a few times being led by my friend when she is riding her pone.

Anyway, aside from the above, what are people's opinions on him? CC welcome, although perhaps a little gentle [as in not rude - tact when expressing any opinion is always appreciated!].

I would also appreciate people's views on what type of classes he may be able to do. I haven't got anything in mind in particular, I would just be interested to see what he may be eligible for and take him out next year for a bit of experience more than anything else before seriously deciding whether to pursue one avenue or another!

So here he is:-

Thanks! Hot chocolate fudge brownie with white chocolate sauce for all those that assist!! [yes I'm dreaming of my local pubs dessert which I'm not allowed for reasons of "being good"!!!

With riding horse you would usually walk trot and canter in a group on both reins then be pulled up into a line and the judge would usually ride your horse. I believe in some cases you need to do an individual show however most of the time the judge will ride. Once the judge has finished you will need someone to help take your saddle off and give the horse a quick flick over ready to run the horse up in front of another judge. then saddle up again and wait for the final decision. Lightweight hunter is more or less the same kind of thing. different areas differ slightly as to whether you do an individual show or not, sometimes depends how many are in your class.
Hope that helps a little bit?!

No help on classes I'm afraid, but he is such a gorgeous colour! Well done for starting him off so well and I hope you have years of fun with him :)

He is lovely and as you say, very eyecatching in terms of his colouring.
Have you done any in-hand showing with him - it's a good way of introducing them to the atmosphere of a show without the worry of getting over excited under saddle.
I don't know if other shows do this but our RC showing show has a lovely class for novice riding horses. You do it in a snaffle bit, and you do an individual show, but the judge doesn't ride them and they don't get stripped off and run up in hand. The idea is that they do this class one year for experience then move up to the proper riding horse class. It is always a busy class!

Thank you :)

I will definitely look into the novice riding horse clas; it definitely appeals for the reasons you specify. We've not been out before [transport previously being an issue] so I think it is sensible as you say to try in hand first and progress to under saddle. He isn't "silly" in new places, so hopefully this will cross over to when he starts going out and about.

In terms of duns being shown and Judge's preferences, has anyone any idea how they do? I have heard previously that some Judge's have aversion to certain colours and wonder whether this is likely to be the case with him?

He's a gorgeous colour - i have a soft spot for duns!

I'd have said show hunter class.

He may have one too many blemishes for show hunter! On the inside of his right hind he has a "s" shape scar [looks like I've drawn on him in black biro] from where he had an argument with a wheelbarrow as a yearling; on his off hind on his cannon he is a very small lump from a cut he had and he is currently going through sarcoid treatment on the base of his left ear which may or may not leave a scar due to the strength of cream we're now on.

This seems to be the caveat with him; accident prone as hell!!!!
