Hi all,
now no laughing please!

I have a cracking little horse, an ex harness racer that is totally brill on Fun rides, doesn't hot up etc- even if people blast past him, he is just a star. HOWEVER! I managed to part company with him on a hack back in the summer and he sodded off. He also isn't confident jumping so I wouldn't want to jump him and anything faster than a brisk walk down hill and you get the feeling you're gonna die. Organising his legs isn't really his thing!!!

I really want to have a go hunting him, partly because i didn't get to do much over the summer because of my ruddy job and partly because people have told me how great it is.

HONEST opinions please.
Thanks,
xx

Gallop, you're havin a laugh, Dragon paces hence the feeling your gonna die if you go down hill at anything faster than a walk!!! :-)

ha ha! selling tickets could be one way of paying for his keep this winter....
Alec, NOT from a safety of me and my horse point of view of from the point of other people hunting, just curious!

What part of the country are you in? In some areas jumping is minimal and there are always ways around; in other areas jumping is almost the 'raison d'etre', so this will have a big bearing on the advice you are given.

TBH, regardless of where you are, if you are so unsure I would advise you to wait until next season and then get out early on the first day of cubbing/autumn hunting....normally about first week in September.

No harm in making contact with your local hunt secretary now though.....some contact via email and send out round robbins with the hunt meets, so get your name on the list. Find out the current costs and use the time in the interim to work on your horse riding across country, improving balance and also your confidence. Then......go and enjoy!:):)

I'm in South Herefordshire. That is really good sound advice. I think i'll go along on foot a few times this season and then try it next. Thank you!! :-)

After at least 10 seconds of considered thought, then NOT!

Alec.

Ets, E_K, that was very cruel of you!! a.

NNNnnooooooooo...but still want to know where and when, could be vveerrryyy interesting. Sure I read once about somebody attempting to hunt a Hackney, which was funny.A trotter though would I guess be smoother, crumbs! Must see this one. What speeds do trotters get up to???

He's a pacer not a trotter- makes for an even more entertaining ride!

Blimin` `eck..thirty two miles an hour in camel gait....until a fence comes up...ooops.

You will just have to go through the gates instead of over them!

I think you would have fantasic fun go for it and let us know! I have visions of you shooting past the field who are all galloping flat out!

He's far to poliet to do that, but he has wiped the floor with my friends horses, 2 Irish sports horses and a TBx god knows what!! It doesn't half make you pray when he's flat out!!!! ha ha

If you're South Herefordshire, then you could go out with the South Hereford & Ross Harriers or the Radnor and West.

So far as I know, SH&RH do pop the odd hunt rail - more than the R&W where you don't really have to leave the floor much at all - more open spaces and hill country - both are very friendly and welcoming packs who'd be delighted to see you!

In France, they all hunt trotters (yes I know he paces lol!) and no one jumps - they hunt mainly in woodland though, so go up and down the rides :)
