I was pretty much set to give up horses for the foreseeable future after everything with Torres and Summer. Unfortunately I could not even contemplate buying another financially, as I had absolutely no lump sum to purchase. The stress of everything really took its toll on me emotionally and I have to say my love for horses was somewhat gone.

And then this boy rocked up. I've actually met him several times before, he is one of the lovely livery yard owners horses where my friend keeps her herd. He was tentatively looking for a full loan home and although I wasn't massively enthused (in fact I had even dismissed him earlier this summer in the field as "not being my type", eating humble pie now!) my friend coaxed me on to him. And what a total star... I spent several weekends going back to ride him and he just left me with such a massive smile every time. So straightforward, honest, simple and generous. He's totally daft but just the most uncomplicated horse you could hope to meet. He stables, he turns out, he loads, he ties up, he leaves the yard without standing on his back legs... The list goes on and all of these things are total novelties after my mare!

Most of all I feel 100% safe on him at all times. He's been home for ten days and bar a few days off I've hacked him out alone every single day. I feel like I could go anywhere with him and no longer am I constantly looking one hundred metres ahead to see what was there to provoke a spin, rear or a massive spook. He's still got enough about him to be fun and he LOVES his jumping.

Slowly but surely he is restoring my faith that horses are fun, that it's meant to be easy and that its not always as horribly stressful as the last 12 months have been. So here is Basil.. Please excuse my awful jumping position but this is the highest I've jumped in over a year (pathetic I know.. I am truly terrified now) and Basil took total charge even when I was practically begging him to put a stop in.

You may notice the hernia on his belly.. He had surgery a few years ago as he ate some wire, I did say he was a bit daft.... But I totally adore him already :) I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to have such a fab little horse on loan, hoping to get him fit enough to do a little hunting over winter and then some general RC stuff next year. I still miss Torres a huge, horrible amount, some days it feels like it only just all happened but I am grateful for everything he taught me and the time that I did have with him.

Ps I still can't say anything about anything else for now, but all safe and happy ;)

It's great to see you on board! Glad that you have found an "unbroken" beastie to share your horse time with. He looks a real sweetie and one that you can have some fun with.

Hehe thanks, he is just such a dude. Not at all the type I would have bought/wanted to buy but exactly what I SHOULD have bought. I think a well earned rest from TB's, and warmbloods that are really more TB.. Is deserved ;)

Fantastic update - he looks like a great character. I'm so pleased for you. :D

Brilliant! Absolutely fantastic update, I'm so pleased for you. After everything you've been through it is great that you can finally (hopefully!) just relax and enjoy riding again. Great news. Please keep us posted .

Definitely the way forward, so glad you aren't going for the bad feet- heartbreaking as it is to walk away!!!! Third time lucky for us both eh? X

I haven't counted her out just yet, but vet thinks the corn will take a while to heal so thought I should try a horse on loan before I totally give up! (I'm secretly enjoying lie ins before work and chilling in the evenings!) and then see how she is once recovered and see if money can be discussed etc - she has been cubbing since start of season, doing be100's and sj 1m10 so surely her feet can't be that bad? I haven't really sat down and thought about it all yet! Sorry, invading your post! Enjoy your new boy!!

I'm obsessed with feet now after my experience with T and new (though still very limited)knowledge and personally wouldn't buy anything with "bad feet" unless it wasn't expensive and I was happy to do barefoot rehab, bearing in mind the horse won't exactly be able to go out hunting tomorrow if you take shoes off. If I had time and didn't want to crack on then I would... I guess it depends what you want? Personally I see feet with issues like corns (how Torres started) as being a ticking time bomb unless they are improved. If the vet has advised against purchase based on her feet.... I don't know. She may be sound now without the corn but for how much longer?

Just go careful, maybe get some pictures of them and see what the barefooters on here think. They are so knowledgable and will be able to give you a good idea, especially ycbm. Xx

What a lovely kind, honest face, so full of character. He looks and sounds to be exactly what you need. Hope you both have lots of fun for the foreseeable future (and beyond).

Aww he's lovely - so glad he has restored your faith in horses again.

Of all the sad stories on here your posts about Torres really stirred me, especially those last photos :-( well done Basil for making you smile again x
