My lovely boy was off for over a month with a new splint that caused low level lameness. He was turned out but not ridden until he came sound (around three weeks ago). I've brought him back into work slowly, and finally yesterday did some proper schooling for the first time. He felt amazing - like he has has ironed out some of his baby problems while he was off work! I was thrilled to bits as I had been so worried about him.

Anyway, that's the self indulgent part. Now I need to get him into full work and ready to go out again. My problem is that he is inherently lazy. When he is fired up (if he finds something to spook at for example) I can channel that energy and he is brilliant. But I find it difficult to get him to that point. He's a typical warmblood - big movement but quite happy to swan along not quite fully in front of the leg. He gets away with it as his paces are so good. But I need to have the feeling he gives me when he is fired up in order to bring him further.

He is rising 6, working elementary, competing novice. In full work he is schooled or lunged four times a week, hacked the rest, usually competed once a week. He's a very good do-er, in fact he put on a bit of a belly while out of work, despite not being fed much at all. Now in light/medium work he is fed Hi Fi, D+H Country cubes (1/3 scoop per day divided into two feeds), sugar beet and oil, as well as Biotal equine gold and Cortaflex. I've taken him off haylege due to his weight but he has adlib hay. He's turned out from 6.30am till 3pm most weekdays.

Does anyone have any strategies (exercise regime, feeding, or otherwise) to help me up his energy levels (without increasing his weight or turning him into a nutcase - lol)? His engine is there, I just need to figure out a way of firing it reliably.

Thanks!

Sounds just like Winston. I used D&H Performance Concentrate. This was graet for not putting on calories but adding energy.
The feed ppl were very worried because it is like rocket fuel! but winston was just normal, just gave him a bit more GO when we were eventing.

See isnt that funny, I would love Snoopy to be less fired up! he does everything at 100mph given half the chance

I am constantly having to *slow* him in walk and trot. And your boy and Snoops share the same sire...

The other thing you can try is a balancer say like Nesler Solid Gold or Ultimate Balancer and then just add Oats as and when you require - thats what winston was on before i discovered performance concentrate. However, i only fed the latter in teh summer and switched back to Balancer, Hifi, SB and Oats in the winter.

I also used to use Biotal, remember this will help chill him out and help put on weight.

Thanks BBs! Oz isn't lazy lazy, just not quite as forward as I need him to be. He is quite happy to try to bugger off when he feels like it though, which is why I'm wary of anything too "rocket fuel" like.
I use Biotal as he is very prone to diarrhoea and this seems to keep it under control.

I used to feed D+H ultimate balancer to my old horse. Perhaps I should try that regime again. Or maybe the Equilibra and tiger oats combination - I've heard good things about that?

Perhaps I need to bring him to see his bro Snoops and learn how to bounce properly!!!

Someone told me recently to stay clear of Equilibra - but i cannot for the life of me remember why.
I like the balancer oat route because you can add and take it away when required.
Snoop is on the balancer with Hi Fi and SB. Hes not actually a spooky horse, hes quite laid back kinda guy too. But when hes schooling he has to do everything FAST, mainly because hes still weak I guess.
Please bring him over, I need as much help with my flat work as i can, and i am sure Snoop will help wtih the bouncyness

I think perhaps with generaly fittening work he will get his energy levels increased aswel - i find altho Archie has the energy to begin with his stamina is quite low. Im going to be putting him onto Baileys outshine soon which is meant to increase stamina - however might not be good for yours as its meant to promote weight gain also.

Im sure you are doing this already, but lots and lots of hill work, trotting up and down etc will help with his energy x

I really wish we had some hills! We don't. The closest thing we have to a hill is a tiny incline up a man-made bank. I want hills!!!
I have been introducing some slow long canters on our flat fields (amazingly the ground is ok), which should help stamina, but still not as good as hill work, I know.

Thanks guys!

Well you will just have to box up to me for a hack then

We have 3 hills to choose from

Makes a nice change from Otmoor.
Theyre quite steep (for around here) and go on for a bit, you are more than welcome lol i should charge

extremely small!!!!!!!!!!!

the reason i said lincoln was because when i competed Bloss up there i was totally shocked by the flatness of it, we were just driving along and i couldnt see a single hill, it was really bizarre! Im so used to all the hills round my yard!

I think I'm in the flattest part of Oxfordshire! We are on a flood plane and have absolutely no hills at all, even within hacking distance. We might as well be in Lincoln.
