I thought i'd share a happy story with you.

on 21st Nov 2010, my gorgeous boy was kicked in the field and sustained a 6 inch fracture to his front leg (radius bone). He was very very poorly and spent 10 weeks cross tied at the vets. This is a picture of him with a special splint attached after the vets had to remove his big bandages as they gave him awful pressure sores.

On new years eve 2010 - the vets phoned to say his leg was infected so they had to risk taking all the dressings off and just hope his leg would hold up, and that he wouldn't try to lie down as that would have shattered the bones.

Against all the odds he kept pulling through. We had to wrap his head collars in cotton wool and vet wrap as wearing it all the time cross tied was giving him sores on his face and ears.

At the end of January he finally came home. We had another 4 months of box rest and almost a year of slow rehabilitation but bit by bit we got our old boy back, and the icing on the cake was when the vets said we should start bringing him back into light work again. At first he could only cope with a 10 min walk up the drive, but bit by bit he build his strenght back up again.

Today I entered a little W&T dressage comp at our new yard that moved to 3 weeks ago. We didn't practice as we don't school any more, but I just wanted to have a go since its n site. My gorgeous boy came 2nd with 63%. I spent the whole test trying not to cry and his other mum cried the whole way though. Today was the most special day ever and we are so proud of our gorgeous brave boy. He turns 19 in March and is the most amazing horse.

That is such an amazing story, and what a special horse you have. Wishing you many more happy (and accident free!) years with him.

Wow, those works 'broken leg' are just terrifying and to me generally signify a tragic outcome so I am knocked for six by your continued commitment to him and his amazing recovery - well done, you must be ecstatic, I can certainly understand your tears of joy today! :)

Lovely lovely story to read and so pleased for you. Sadly I lost my mare to a broken leg in the field 7 yrs ago and hers was too bad to mend, so it is nice to see a happy ending.

Thanks everyone - he is so special. It was such a tough year. We had so many set backs along the way that we never thought he'd make it home, but he was an amazing patient.

It made the hour long nightly drives to the vets for 10 weeks worth while and the 6 months of box rest and getting up at 5am to get up to the yard so I could muck out and spend time with him before work all worth it.

Izzwizz - so sorry to hear about your mare. I realise just how lucky were were. x

Fab! & lovely 2 c hes competing now!

The day ure boy got injured is the same day I had my mare PTS with an almost identical injury (her fracture went almost full length of bone). So so glad it worked out 4 u

Ohhh what a hearwarming story. I had a horse who broke his leg and I wonder now how I ever got through it. It's such a rollercoaster.
You two are lucky to have each other. Well done on your result. xxx

Just thought I'd add a picture of Joe's xray pic - so you can see just how bad his fracture was - and how amazing it is that he got better!

I saw this on the vets facebook page that you had updated them with the good news of his dressage test. What an amazing recovery and a lovely sucess story. Well done to you and the vets, he is gorgeous :)

Wow . . . what a wonderful story and well done for persevering with your lovely boy. This brought a tear to my eye. Thank you for sharing.

Wow! U really deserved to have such a fantastic day with ur boy! I'm sure he knew it too! Congrats! Beautiful picture too!!

It's almost a yr to the day my mare was pts with a broken leg but her prognosis was just too poor to warrant the box rest etc.

he's a lucky boy and u r clearly such a dedicated loving owner!
