I’ve been reading (and lurking on) the many barefoot threads over the past couple of months, and find it all so, so interesting! I have 7 horses; some shod, some unshod. All of those in work hack over various terrains without issues.

I thought it might be interesting if I post some photos of one of my horses’ feet to see what you all think of them. Any comments on his feet welcome (any guesses as to breed, or how long he’s been barefoot? etc). He’s under the care of an excellent farrier, but I’m very interested in what other people can pick up, just by looking at his feet! All I’ll say is that I haven't had him long, and he’s shod in front, so only pics of the back feet.

So, here we go...

Any thoughts?

I'm still learning too so I take this as an opportunity to do more learning, thanks for posting Teamo.. do hope some of the more experienced trimmers come on and take a look too.

The first photo makes the heels look too low almost looking at the growth lines growing down but then I see the second and it looks like there is not much hoof wall growth just sole and frog contact and the third one also show a thin wall but with really good sole and frog with majority of ground contact on the sole rather than wall too. That's just my observations... I also think there might be a tiny bit of white line seperation on that toe. I'll try and post my boys hinds...

Thanks, Tallyho. I agree with you (and I chose this horse to photograph because I think his feet are the most interesting!). You can see a slight bullnosing of the feet, which ties in with the white line separation you mentioned. But he does have quite good frogs and soles.

He's only been out of shoes on his hinds for 7 weeks, but his frogs and soles have come on really well - disproportionately to the hoof wall and heels, which need work. Hopefully a better diet will help too.
